Farmall 504 Hydraulic problems

Guys,
I have read several topics and replies here the last couple of weeks since buying my 504, good information. That being said I need some help - my 504 3 pt lift stopped working. The power steering and rear remotes work fine. I have changed the filter and oil - since it is a Hay/project tractor I would like to try the small simple tricks before calling in the big boys. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Don't know squat about a 504, but would assume that they are like any other International.

That hitch will probably have it's own pump. Bolts right on the back of the aux pump "piggyback".

It"s a "double" pump- smaller side is the 3 pt, larger is the remotes and PS. Sounds like a weak pump. Could also be low on fluid- if you fill to the plug about halfway up the side of the housing, you"ll always be short of oil. Oil level should be 8" below the top of the housing.

Mike, do you know if there is a screen or filter in the valve control body (lift/draft lever body) that could be clogged? It probably is the 4.5 draft pump but I want to eleminate all before tearing into the pump.

I Don't remember if it was a 504 I worked on when I took the pump apart the self compensating plates were stuck I just cleaned them up and it worked and on another one I swapped the plates so the worn sections were pointing towards the casing.

I don't know of any screen or filter in the valve body itself, but I've never been into it. Sounds like you've already checked the main filters (on right side of clutch housing, just ahead of the brake pedals- flat cover, held on by 6 bolts). I guess I'd get a manual before I went further than the pump or filters- IT manual covers it pretty well- IH-210 covers 504 and some others.

Mike, I have a 504 row crop the remotes are very weak, I found out by accident that if you dead head the steering the remotes work great, I have never filled past the plug, do you think oil shortage is my problem?

I am not sure if the 504 hitch pump joins the aux valve flow when hitch is not being raised like the 656 does, but if it does, you can tell if the unloading valve in hitch is your problem by deadheading one of the aux valves while trying to lift hitch to see if it raises then. Even if the flow does not join , the unloading valve may be the problem but I don't know of a simple quick way of checking it right off the top of my head.
