Briggs Stratton 18 HP TLB engine

I have a Terrimite T5 backhoe with a B&S 18 HP 2cyl opposed engine. I was using it this week and the starter drive went bad. It has a hydrastat transmission so it was a pain to get it into the shop to repair. I had to remove the fuel tank, grill, engine , and engine shroud to get to the starter. I replaced the bendix with a new one and put it all back together. It started up fine, so I finished putting it all back again. After I finished I started it up and it started fine but it is cold natured and cut off. I restarted it and it cut off again. Then the starter drive went out again. The gear on the drive just disintagrated, just like the origional. Now I have to repete the whole process again, but don't want to make a habit of it. My question is there something I'm missing. could the starter itself be bad or maybe the flywheel? The ring gear looks fine and the compression release seems to be working correctly as the engine spins freely by hand.
Also the starter itself sounds odd. It almost sounds like a gear drive starter, but I don't have another 2 cyl opposed to compare the sound to. Can anyone help? Thanks, Nat

Nat,

Did you check the flywheel key as well as the valve clearance settings?

I seem to recall an issue or two with destroying the plastic start gear but can't come up with any more details at the moment. If I were you I'd register over at perr.com and post the question on their Tech Forum. Lots of SHARP Briggs GURUS over there.

Also check the ring gear on the flywheel for missing teeth. For a couple of years Briggs tried using a plastic flywheel ring gear. It did not work out and sometimes do what you describe.

It is possible that it is a camshaft problem. A soft cam and the lobes wear down causing insuficient valve clearance. Ive seen that happen. Properly Diagnosed after several starter repairs. Used to own an authrized B&S repair center.

My 2004 T5C has a 20 hp Kohler. My ignition switch stuck in the on position and it kept the starter ingauged. Had I not caught it I too would have been replacing my starter drive. I fixed my problem by spraying WD40 in the switch. I have never heard of a briggs on a terramite. How old is yours?

make sure youre using a genuine briggs starter gear...i've had problems with aftermarket gears on certain engines...also the entire bendix could be worn to a point that it cocks when under load...that'll blow a gear apart quick.
