I recently sold my home and I had a limited time to vacate. Pocession was the day of closing.
Everything went well with the help I had, but there was a few small things that I decided to leave.
My wife and I went back to the home, by their request, on two different occasions and helped them with things like closing the swimming pool and showing them many things about the home that would help them.
We were ready to leave and asked them if we could have the dehumidifier we had left and they refused. They said they would have to think about it.
Am I wrong in being a little disappointed?

Hey Jiles,

You're not wrong to be disappointed. Keep it in mind if they call again for advice. Just tell 'em exactly what they told you - "I'll have to think about it"

Was the dehumidifier specified as NOT being part of the sale? If it wasn't specified, you don't have a LEGAL leg to stand on.

A dehumidifier is not attached to anything therefore it would be considered personal property unless the contract said specifically that the new owners were entitled to it.

I agree, it's not considered a permanent fixture and unles it was specified as part of the house, you should be able to have it. I lost a washer and dryer because of a darn realtor. She also tried(unsuccessfully) to give away my homemade wood heater to the new owners when I specifically told her I was taking it. The washer and dryer were in a mobile home and when I told her I had to take them out, she said that washers and dryers come with mobile homes. Ya, when you buy a new mobile home for $80,000+, not when you buy one for $6000. I have no use for realtors. They are one of the lowest forms of life. Dave

But since it was left behind at the time the new owners took possession, it would be presumed to have been abandoned by the sellers, and unless something had been said about it at the time, the purchasers are under no obligation to do the neighborly thing and allow the sellers to reclaim it.

If you wanted it, you should have taken it with you, prior to the sale. Since it was left behind, I'm sure they figured that it came with the place. Asking to have it back now, may make you look bad in their eyes. Perhaps they consider you to be an "Indian giver". Ever look at it that way?

I sold a place one time and they wrote "tractor implements" on their counteroffer, as being part of the sale. I had a few odds and ends of junk around, so said fine, and signed. I had an Oliver 550 diesel, but it was on an uncle's farm 3 miles away, so didn't think a thing of it.

We had 30 days to vacate, and they came over a couple times to see how the well worked, etc. The second time, I had brought the Oliver home, and he asked me to show him how to start it. I said there was no reason to, because it wasn't his. He reminded me of the "tractor implements" clause, and I reminded him that what he saw was what he got, and that didn't include the Oliver.

He continued to whine and threaten lawsuits, and I guess the broker finally bought him a second hand lawn tractor to shut him up. There was a floor safe under a basement bathroom vanity with a false floor, and to this day (20 years later), I wonder whether he ever found it, or just didn't have the nerve to ask for the combination.

What is strange is that they OFFERED me a $300.00 wireless security system, which I took. They even offered me a work bench I had made but I did not have room for it. There was no mention of the dehumidifier at the time of sale or closing.
Several items were left by the owners of the home I bought and I called them to inform them. They were pleased to get the VCR player and the tape recorder and a few other items.
All these problems come from being in a rush to move. I know I should have went back and got the dehumidifier but I ASSUMED there would be no problem.
Since it has been 3 months, I have bought me a new dehumidifier and will not forget when asked for more information or help.
To me, it is the principle, not the money.

When my sis was looking for property, one place at the bidding, they said they forgot to mention the handmade chime screwed on the wall. If the buyer didn't want it, the seller would love to have it as it was made by here relative. But as it was attached, it was officially part of the sale at this time.

The place my sis bought, sold with the lp tank. After the closed, the liquid fill & hose stuff that was screwed to the tank were all gone. They coulda pushed that, but there were enough other issues that it wasn't worth persuing. Pretty dirty tho.... Was 3 bothers that were selling it, one was a pack rat, their dad worked at a garbage dump and was a pack rat brought work home with him.... It was an interesting deal all around.

Turn the situation around... if the buyers knew of this site they'd have probably beaten you here with a post of "some People... richard edward seller wants dehumidifier back!

Should have asked, did you have a realtor? Put them on the hook and make them pay for your new dehumidifier, if you did. Dave

Guess you were never a Boy Scout............ Must suck being your neighbor.

Merry Christmas.

Dave

For the OP, things happen for a reason....... Let em keep the junk, That dehumidifier may spark a fire that wipes out all the house and possessions, at least it won't do it to you.

Always best to have a grand or two hold back bucks for the unexpected. Last house I bought they removed the bath room hard ware not all of it and back board off the basket ball pole. Big shots in the Illinois Bendictine College in Naperville, IL. bible type school for you who did not attend. Cut them 3 grand so I was OK. The unpaid bill that came in the mail were sent back to sender. They left town and did not leave a forwarding address with the P.O. The best they turned of the gas to the furnace. Took me about 3 seconds to start it up. Turds in all walks of life even with bible in hand..

When my son and Daughter-in-law sold their previous house, the old biddy, er I mean, the lady who bought it demanded that the new push broom he had hanging on the wall in the attached garage stayed with the house. He's a young married man with children and not a lot of money, but she had enough spare cash to buy the house for what he was asking. He just grumbled under his breath. Wasn't about to lose a good sale over a broom. He had to muffle his wife cause she speaks her mind a bit too freely sometimes. Jim

I"ve lived in and sold several properties in my life and my dad taught me one thing and that is never ever turn over the keys until you have removed every single thing that is yours even if you"re late doing so I just use "I wanted to clean the house up for you because I would be ashamed of the way I left it" which always works. If it ain"t on paper it"s yours within reason. Dave2 you can appreciate this the military always taught me one thing and that is verbal agreements and instructions aren"t worth the paper they"re written on. As much as I don"t like it those handshake agreements went out the window a long time ago. It"s buyer/seller beware. I don"t agree with utilities items like stoves, water heaters, light fixtures etc. being removed. If the realtor was good should have asked at each area do you see anything you want in the deal so it can be factored in I mean jeez they should earn their 6 or 7% for gosh sakes especially more means more for them. My two cents. CT

I have a neighbor that borrowed an expensive tool from another neighbor. The neighbor that owned the tool passed away and never had his tool returned. The neighbor that borrrowed the tool tells every one how he got it for nothing, and he sees the brother of the deceased every week and he will not return it. Very sad.

Hope the humidifier sparks a fire that burns down the house? And just what event made you a Martyr? Must SUCK to be YOUR neighbor.

As the military taught me, #1 Assumption is the mother of all $#@# - ups. #2 Assume - to make an a$$ out of U and ME.

You said tractor implements, not tractors. Either I am missing something or something has been left out, 'cause this makes NO sense at all.

If it was me,I'd likely just forget about it and chalk it to a cheap lesson learned. They in their defence just bought a house and likely don't want to buy another dehumidifier right now.A new one here costs $200 ,and that's in Canada where just about everything is 50% more than in the U.S.,so guessing like $140 there? As far as lesson learned,if you have the opportunity to sell a piece of property in the future,as the others have said cover your a$$.Have in writing what stays, and what leaves, and what leaves, make sure it's out when the new owners recieve the keys,or it may very well happen again.Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year,pd.

Not sure where you got that, but as long as you feel better I'm glad to be your sounding board....

Take care,

Dave

Technically, the dehumidifier should be yours since it's not an attached fixture. But face it, it's not that expensive, and if it's a few years old it may be ready to fail anyway. Life it too short to get hung up on possessions, particularly those that are easily replaced.

We bought our house the final inspection there was a big desk by the front door, on the white carpet, the rest of the house was cleaned out and fine.

After the closing and the next day we went to move in and under where the desk was sitting was a black tarry foot print!

A few months later a door to door vacuum cleaner salesman stops by with a wonder machine with all the attachments. My wife asks the guy if he thought it would get the foot print out... He said sure and set about working on the stain. He was there 3 hours and got the stain out. My wife thanked him and showed him to the door.

Once they took possession of the house it
belonged to them. You should have picked it up before closing.A minor thing to get upset over.

Bought and sold 9 houses and 40 cars and trucks and cycles. If this is the worst deal you ever have, count your blessings. Dave
