allis b mag timing ???

ok on the allis b, i am trying to set the mag timing. the manual is a little vague. i have the motor on tdc with the fire indicator showing on the flywheel thru the inspection window. the rotor on the mag is laying before tdc with the impulse coupler wound up, and then when it fires, the rotor seems to be closer to what it should be. there is a viewing window on the dist cap and a white dot on the rotor. with the impulse coupler wound up and ready to fire, the dot is not lined up in the window, but once fired, it seems to line up better. its a crank start only, and im not too excited having this rascal kick me when cranking. thanks and merry christmas to all!!!!

The quick way I do it is to put the magneto in a vise and set the cover over the points while holding the rotor on the number one nub with the small steel gear pointing down.

It would be the same as the (A) on the fiber gear. That is if the fiber gear is marked.

After I have the cover on I put the cap on and put a Plug wire in number one terminal with a plug on the other end. I ground the plug on the top of the magneto and snap the impulse watching spark at the plug. I move the wire to each terminal and when the it sparks at the fourth terminal I tape the impulse to keep it from turning. It is now ready to fire next on number one.
At the tractor I start to bring it up to number one compression stroke and watch that the magneto drive so I can engage the drive before the impulse spring interferes. Turn the crank until i snaps over watching the grounded spark plug in number one terminal. As soon as it sparks I check for TDC in the inspection hole. I adjust the magneto until at the snap of number one the TDC is centered. If it is done this way when it is running and you put a timing light at the inspection hole you will see the TDC line centered.

Should have been (C) rather than A on the above
A would be for the counter clock way magneto.

hot dang, she fired up!!!!! thanks for all the help!!!!!! runs good, 20 lbs oil pressure at fast idle. have a carb issue to straighten out, it running only with the choke on. (owner had rebuilt the carb) so i will pull that apart and clean up a few issues!!!
