skunk living under porch

I have a skunk living underneath my porch. My dog decided to play with it last night and got nailed in the face. She doesn't really smell anymore, the house has an odor from the porch smelling but the skunk is still under there.
when the dog had it cornered I whacked it with a broom handle which stunned it while we got the dog inside. Yet, it still returned to the porch.
how do i a)get it to leave voluntarily b) get it to come out so i can shoot it c)get it into a "have a heart" trap so i can either shoot it or throw it into the furnace.
never baited a skunk before, any advice would be helpful -

Live trap with rope attatched so you can drag it away from the house + cat or dog food for bait +.22 rifle while still in trap = skunk no more.
I was invaded with a whole family of them last year.

Talked to a guy who used a live trap a can of tuna laced with two Valium ground up works like a charm. Skunk takes a nap-haul it in the trap to you least farvorite town or area and let it go.

Most states skunk has no closed season.

Conibear traps work well as long as you do not have any pets that could get to the trap.

Amen to the comment about the skunks all being in Washington DC!

I don't know the procedure, but knock it out and have it de-scented. My uncles caught and de-scented skunks for people for pets when they were kids.

Hava-a-heart trap baited with tuna will get him in there. Cover the trap with some old carpet so the trap is in a tunnel. Skunk will be less likely to spray if he can't see you. Up to you how to dispose of him. I have a friend that swears that hooking up a tube to your car's exhaust and gassing them is the best way to go. 15~20 minutes of idling puts them away gently.

I can tell you that our dog got sprayed this summer during her 11:00 pm break and it's not good. Forget tomato juice and get 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide mixed with warm water and dish soap. (Try finding peroxide at 11:30 at night in a small town). We now have a stash in the house at all times.

A fellow heard some noise in an attached garage. He let his dog out,the dog chased the skunk thru the open kitchen door. The dog barked at the skunk and the skunk sprayed the dog in his mouth. That made the dog puke. The dog and the skunk did this in the kitchen, dining room, living room and a bedroom before the skunk ran out of the kitchen into the garage and outdoors. The dog never gave up the chase. My neigbor had a big Lab that cornered a skunk under his new truck. The skunk got the truck the dog and my neighbor. His wife made him strip naked in the yard.Put him in the tub to get him deskunked.

A couple of weeks ago, my brother-i-law, had his chickens being killed. He sat a live trap outside the coup, not expecting what he would find in the morning. You guessed it. He called me, knowing I had removed several in the past. My method had been to pleace a black sheet over the front of the trap, folded so once inside it could be unfolded to cover the complete trap and transport it. Never had one spray covered, even in the trunk of a car. Not expecting a skunk he did not use a sheet, making this more difficult, we approached from the side, the sheet covering us, and tossed it over the trap, then carried it away from the house, released it where he could have target practice.

I've caught and dispatched 8 skunks over the last two years. A live trap with sugar donuts works the best, the white ones with a powdered sugar coating. Tuna or sardines will attract cats and you will catch more cats than skunks. Leave it out overnight and keep it set for a while even after you get the one under your porch. You will probably find out you have more.

I've always just shot them in the trap with a 22 but have found out it doesn't matter how/where you shoot the durn things they will still stink. Like the Valium idea but I don't have access, maybe now that I'm able to get on Medicare I'll be able to talk some doc into a prescription.

Bob - MI is right about using hydrogen peroxide but add baking soda to the warm water and dish soap..

Had the same problem. Tried tuna in a live trap, but I kept catching barn cats, and not the skunk. I went to peanut butter on a piece of bread, and caught the skunk the first night. I was told that if you cover the cage, and then pick it up, you can transport the live skunk without being sprayed. WRONG! Took a bath in tomato juice. Twice. Two weeks later, you could barely smell me coming. Barely.

Two choices 1. lure it out with the live trap and rope scenario(with a cover on the trap so it can't see you comming), and then seal up the porch so it can't get back in.
2. Call a professional vermin trapper to catch and kill it and dispose of it properly. They can be rabies carriers.
I had one under my front porch (cement but hollow) last year. I just left it alone and it eventually went on it's way. I don't have a dog now though. That's a whole different story. I prefer not to mess with them if I can help it.

I'm not questioning a covered trapped skunk spraying on you, but it's never happened to me. I am a licenced nuisence control office, and would much rather catch beavers (preferrably female), and keeping porcupines from the chipboard siding on a cabin using amonia spray, but skunks have been taken from downstairs washing machines, from underneath a vehicle being worked on, under a covered row boat behind a house, and others. I have cleaned dogs, and once had to run from one outdoors.

Stick your havaheart trap in a black plastic garbage bag and tie around the opening for a tunnel effect. Have an extra when he tears the bottom trying to get out. The trick is trying to open and then hold the trap door open so you can take off when you want to release it. I used a block of wood to stick in the trap door to hold it open. No easy way to release it. Trapped a possum and had to lean it against something. The possum just didn't want to leave.
