Cat engine numbers.

Does anyone know where I can find a chart to decipher the Cat engined numbers. 3326, 3208, etc.... Google is not helping.
 

I'm not sure what you want to decipher...Can you explain better?

I don't know if I'm helping but this might explain it a little bit, I've figured this out on my own:
The last number or last 2 numbers are the number of cylinders. I.E.- 3208 is 8 cyl, 3412 is 12 cyl, 3516 is 16 cyl, 3406 is 6 cyl, 3054 is a 4 cyl. etc. The first 2 numbers seem to be the "series". I.E.- a 3508 is an 8 cyl version of a 3516, etc. It gets you close, but it's not perfect. I.E. a 3114 is a 4 cyl version of a 3116. A 3126 is a larger displacement 3116, but it uses the same block. A 3176 is a completely different engine, but still a 6 cyl.
 
On modern engines, the first two numbers are the engine family(bore and stroke)and the last two are number of cyls. Post a number of interest to you and we can tell you more.

Just a bit more on that. A 3114 is a 4 cyl 1.1Liter per cyl, 3126 is a 6 cyl 1.2 Liter per cyl, same system for 3176 and 3196. Newer "C" engines C7,C9 etc refer to app displacement in Liters. Perkins and Mitsubishie engines with Cat name have each a different series of numbers.

Chris - Starting in the 1970s (?), the 3XYZ stood for engine, the X stood for the engine series, and the YZ was the total number of cylinders.

This changed with the 3114, 3116 & 3176 in about 1989, where the 3XYZ still stood for engine, but the XY now stood for the liter displacement per cylinder, and the Z stood for the number of cylinders.

This started changing again in about 1995 when the C-10 replaced the 3176. The number is an estimated total liter size.

The most recent change has been the elimination of the dash (C15). The means that it is an engine with ACERT Tech.

The used truck quick reference on the Cat website has much of this.
