Jana, [b:c435264ed1]a new user[/b:c435264ed1], would probably appreciate more of an answer. The phone number refers to ordering service manuals from John Deere publications. This is a great idea anyways.
Hopefully someone will chime in with some help soon.

Go to the John Deere forum and search the archives. It has been discussed many times. You need at least a I&T manual if your gonna do much work on it. Chris

Had the same thing with my J.D. A . I took off my flywheel cleaned the flywheel splines and the crankshaft. Then I reinstalled flywheel with a little medium strength Lock Tite. Used lock tite because this was the 2nd time my flywheel was removed so I wanted to make sure it stayed this time.Leave a little end play so you don't burn the thrust up .003-.005 should work.Make sure your oil slinger pin and oil slinger is also in good shape and lined up.Might check the gaskets too behind the flywheel. Now with all this said it sounds like we had the same problem, but you need to make the call on the best fix for your tractor. This worked well for me and its holding good .I only use this tractor for a toy .So it don't see much use and has not had very much run time.Hoping to have no problems thou.Lots of good information gave on this forum and you should get some good replies.Pick up a manuel it will really help out alot as well. Welcome to the forum and hang in there.

I'm sure you are going to get a lot of different advice on this one. Check the archives, but in a nutshell you need to move the flywheel in on the crankshaft. Couple of things to check first. Is it slinging oil from behind the flywheel, if so you need to replace the cork seal in the oil slinger. Is the slot in the oil slinger and the drive pin in the flywheel in good condition? if not the slot can be remachined and the pin replaced. I assume before we even started that the flywheel has not become loose and worked part way off the crank, rather was not installed correctly in the beginning. If this is not true you probably are looking at some major repair/replacement to crank and flywheel to get back to good tight splines that will hold the flywheel in place. There should be a locator pin on the crankshaft spline that must go into the deepest spline in the flywheel. If not you will have major vibration problems, since you don't mention that I assume it is now on in the correct spline. You can paint mark the flywheel and crank just to be sure before you dis-assemble anything. Two common problems that keep flywheels from going all the way on are not getting the oil slinger slot lined up with the flywheel dive pin and not biasing the crankshaft to the left when installing the flywheel. I usually remove the pulley cover and use a bottle jack from the right wheel to push the crankshaft to the left. The crankshaft should be at least flush with the face of the flywheel, if not something is not correct. The proper end play is .005-.010". You should NOT need locktite or anything else to keep it tight if the splines are in good condition, besides you might be the guy who has to take it off in the future. I would recommend new grade 8 bolts and nuts if you can get them. Don't use the common hardware store stuff, this is a critical application. Good luck with it.

A side note for why I used a little Lock Tite.My flywheel and crank had a little wear on them . I bought the tractor like this so I just wanted the cheapest fix. Also Lock Tite will release with a little heat from a torch so it's not a problem to get things back apart.First time trying to fix problem I got the bolts as tight as I could and they still worked loose.Second time with Lock Tite it stayed in place.
