timing for 580b manual clutch install

I have a 580B case backhoe i recently replaced the mechanical clutch on and surfaced flywheel. The tractor would turn on with no problem before work done. After installing clutch i cranked the motor till i could line up the shaft in gear box to engine. My question is does this make injector pump go out of timing. It fires up and turns off, i purged injectors it cranks and shows signs of wanting to turn on but no luck.

Pete,

Sounds like the governor drive ring in
the pump has failed and the particles have
plugged up the return line fitting which is
a housing pressure regulator of sorts.
Send me an email if you have questions.

George, i looked at it today and lined up the 8 degree on flywheel, checked that cylinder #1 & # 4 had valve tappet loose. The two lines dont line up in the injector pump window. Is it correct to say that my injector pump is out of time.

Pete,

The tappets on #1 should be loose , #4
should have one tight and one loose. But
depending on the valve overlap ,both could
be tight. I think you are 180 out in your
location, turn the crank 1 full turn and see
if the lines are right. It is a rare thing
for a diesel to jump time, unless there is
something broken internaly.

George, I did not align the crank pulley and flywheel TDC before installing. Do you think my flywheel timing is out 180. Do i have to take clutch apart and position flywheel correctly or does it fit only one way?

Did you remove the pump from the engine or open up the timing gears in any way? That's the only way to get the pump out of time unless something broke, There is absolutely nothing you can do in the clutch housing or flywheel area to get anything out of time. The flywheel will only go on one way as the bolts are offset to insure correct installation. The timing marks in the pump will only line up when #1 cylinder is at 8 deg. BTDC. Remove the valve cover and watch the intake valve on #3 cylinder, in the normal direction of rotation turn the engine till #3 intake valve is closing then watch for the 8 deg. mark on the flywheel to line up with the roll pin in the bell housing opening. when it is, the lines in the pump window should be in perfect alignment. The failed ring in the pump is a possibility and you can verify that by removing the return line and fitting out of the top of the pump and trying to start it with the retun hole open. mEl

George, i did not remove the pump or any gears. What will be the out come once i remove return line, fitting and crank engine over? What should i be looking for once i do this?

Thanks,
