Changed thermostat , what a royal pain!

I put in a new GM thermostat in my 2000 Chev. 2500 with a 6.0 litre. Do you need to have a vacuum system to get all the air out? I spent over 3 hours trying to get enough coolant back in. I had to loosen the upper rad several times, then let it idle, hoping to burp it, only to have it start overflowing at the coolant tank. Is there some special procedure on these newer trucks? On older models you can have the thermostat changed and rad. filled in less than half an hour. Very frustrating for sure. Dave

If it is like the Buicks and Chevys, they put the overflow tank lower than the radiator. Look on the fromnt of the engine for two little plugs that sit on top of the water inlets. That is where my Buick gets burped, I am not sure about your chevy. It is a pain. Google it up to be sure.

Yes, they need to be vacuum filled. You can possibly overheat the engine trying to fill up the radiator and letting it burp.

When I worked at one import car dealer, we used to laugh about the one upper radiator hose we stocked that had a brass fitting and a brass thumbscrew you removed to "burp" the cooling system.

Now the GM guys wish they had one

After I thought I had it filled, I parked it outside to idle. When I looked about 5 minutes later it was overheating and a message said low coolant. I put another 3 litres or so of coolant in and then took it for a drive. It seems better so far but I'll check the coolant again tomorrow and will be driving it more. The temp. gauge goes to just under 100C and seems to stay there. I hope its fixed. What was wrong with the old style of radiators and thermostats? A person could fix them a whole lot easier. Dave

I don't know about that engine but all my new thermostats get a 1/8" or so hole drilled in the outer edge to let the air burp. It may take a fraction longer to warm up each time but can save a meltdown when installing it. Many used to come this way when new.

Having the t-stat in the lower rad. hose, I think is why it's such a pain. What was wrong with the old tried and true system? Dave

I just changed the thermostat in my 2500 6L and put coolant in top rad. after removing the hose. I have always had Fords, just reconded chev forgot to put on a rad. cap.
