O/T Toyota car clutch

Well if all goes well or maybe if it doesn't not sure yet. Any how looks like I am going to do some trading for a Toyota car tomorrow but the clutch is weak. So and yes I don't have much to go by yet but it is front wheel drive and the late 80s or early 90s. So do I have to pull the engine to do the job or just the tranny. I'll know more tomorrow but want to get a jump start on ideas.
Thanks

Usually the engine, but it depends on the model. If it runs well, you will be happy with it for a long time. JimN

The guy I'm trading from says it runs well but in the higher gears the clutch slips. He also says if you don't push it hard it pulls just fine but if you hot rod it then it will slip. Maybe I'll get lucky and be able to adjust it out till at least spring. I know I'm not getting hurt on this since I'm trading a Kaw KE 100 dirt bike for it

I can't specifically address the Toyota but I had a 90's some odd Mazda front wheel drive and the shop removed the transaxle to repair the transmission.

Old, done many of these clutch"s. Dosn"t matter what model it is, the trans comes out to do the clutch.

Big reason I ask is I looked in my import Chilton's manual and one of them said you have to pull the engine and tranny as a unit to do the job so figured I would see what you guy might know

No Adjustment on Toyota clutches.
On the other side, on most FRD cars you can hang the engine and remove or unhook the engine mounts and remove one of the axles and slide the tranny about 3 " away and change out the clutch.
Been there done that. Saves unhooking and re hooking a lot of wires and lines. Get the front up high enough from the get go so you can work under there.

Lifting the front is no problem in my shop. That 3 ton chain hoist will lift the whole car with no problem so lifting just the front will be easy. That is how I did the rear end swap on my 1980 Chev pick up last week

if you drop the trans you will have to support the engine build a bridge from fender to fender and you will be glad you did.

On mine I pulled the tranny since it needed a bearing anyways. A big pain compared to the subaru and rwd's I had done before.
