I have some corn stored in the neighbors bin. Hauled it down there wet and he ran it through his dryer and has it in storage now. I paid for the gas as we were drying but what is a fair price to pay for dryer use and bin storage?

Oh I should add it is a brand new dryer. Works real good. set it at 14.5% and thats where every bushel came out at.

How many bushels are we talking? Is your corn in its own bin, or measured/weighed and in with his corn? How many gallons of gas did you use?
How long are you going to store it??

4500 bushels separate bin gas already paid for probably store for 6 mo.

What is the local coop charging for drying and storage? Seems that would be fair.

Prices for gas and electric vary enough around here my answer may not prove useful for someone thirty miles away never mind another state. Some guys are lucky around here and are in municipal energy coops while guys like myself are stuck with the commercial utilities.
Most elevators here will hand out a copy of their drying and storage start and if I were you I would go out and ask locally. You might see some attractive numbers on here but that does not mean your neighbor can do it for that.

The surplus 21% corn I hauled away at harvest cost $16.50 a ton for drying. $6/ton flat fee gets you storage through spring before you have to sell/price it.

Around here .08-12 cent/ bu for grain bin storage, drying bins are on the higher end. Tenant pays for gas and electricity

Years ago, before I had my own, neighbor dried for me- later I dried for others. Total drying cost was 2x the LP gas used. Covered equipment, pto tractor, etc. Farm bin storage is typically 2 cents per bu per month, downtown is 3 cents. I"ve rented out some bins- 6 month minimum, since it ties up the bin for the season.

I rent my 50,000 bushel drying and storage out for 12 cents a bu = 6000 a year.
The person that thinks you should pay the same as the elevator charges forgets that you have to haul it in and out.(handle it twice), worry about the corn going out of condition and get the joy of lugging sweep augers in and out and spending time on the end of a scoop shovel.
Makes the elevator in town a little more attractive. Mark
