I just installed a coal boiler this fall. It"s a rice-stoker unit, so it basically runs like a pellet stove. There are a few local dealers for the coal, I"ve seen prices from $250-$350 per ton in 40 lb bags. Basically it"s the same price as wood pellets, with 50% more heat from the coal.

I have a poorly insulated 1200sqft house, with an outside temp of 30F, it"s costing me about $3.50/day to heat the house to 70F and supply all my hot water.

I'm in MD , my coal comes from NE Pa . I fire
3 furnaces , one in the house and 2 in the shop.
We have been firing coal furnaces since 1950 ,
these are all using stove coal. I get a trailer
load most years and use somewhat less than that
each year , then skip a year sometimes.

I have been burning pea coal in a Surdiac self feeding stove for about 25 years. I get it at the local hardware store for about $7.00 per 50# bag. I use about 20# per day.

I'm in north central ND and burn North Dakota or Wyoming lignite in my shop stoker/hot air furnace.

The Wyoming coal has a LOT more heat and can be had somewhat reasonably if a trucker brings it up on the "backhaul".

i have a coal vein 97 ft underground at my farm, they say about 19 ft thick. one of these days i gotta figure out how to dig down and get some!! the whole area around me was a coal mining area.

I have a EFM coal stoker. I burn Rice coal. It comes out of Mount Carmel, PA
I bought 10 ton in sept. and it cost me 170.00 per ton. I have the furnace in the detached garage/work shop and pipe the hot water to the house underground, about 90 feet.

We have an old Bucket -a -day stove that we heat a few central rooms in this old house. We use nut, hard coal, from N.E. Pa. Our other old system is hot air, fired by oil. It seldom comes on.

i have a efm coal stoker boiler.love it on my second year bought a trailer 22 tons bagged. sell some to pay for my heat.

I did till this year. SE Ohio lump coal in a Sears/Homark stove. I started in 1976 when coal was ~$20.00 a ton "clean" loaded out of the tipple. Last year it was $100.00 + a ton loaded with lots of dirt with a skidsteer, when I could find it. I sure love the heat it gives. But I gave up. Installed a pellet furnace this fall. It works great.
