farmall super A charging problem

I have a late 50s Farmall Super A that runs strong but has only one problem. The battery will not charge while the tractor is running. I checked the battery and it is good, but it will not charge while it is running. I rebuilt the alternator, generator, woltedge regulator and the starter and they all checked out fine. I have a new wiring harness but I have not put it in yet. I wanted to wait until it was painted. If you have any ideas to what the problem could be please suggest anything. Or were to start checking for problems. THANKS
 
I don't think you can have both a generator and an alternator on
one tractor. I am not good at electrical things, so I will leave the
question to those who are.

Yup. Can't have both a generator AND an alternator, so which do you have? Original generator? Converted to 12V/ Alternator? Internal? External? regulator? How do you have it hooked up?
 
very simple test ground the field terminal on the gen and if it charges the reg is bad. Use a volt meter before the tractor is started to check the bat volts at the regulator. Then start and get another reading. Then ground the field and see what that reading is. Very simple and it will show whether the gen is good or the reg is bad.

Your test depends on what kind of gen. is on the tractor---might not even be original, and doesn't account for a gen. that's good but a bad regulator cutout relay.

Who knows? Might even be a wiring problem.
 
First order of business will be nailing down whether it's a generator or an alternator. Diagnosis and solutions are two different worlds.
