That Old M Better Start!

Nine below and my feed tractor (Hydro 70) has a frozen up hydraulic filter and won't lift nor move.

That goofy M better start 'cause those critters gotta be fed this morning. :>(

I'm already tired of winter and it isn't even here yet. 54 here this time yesterday, pouring rain, wind above 50mph. 24 this morning, mercifully, the rain stopped before the temps dropped so no snow, wind back to 10 to 15.

Rather than fight cold tractors all winter, I built a small heated bay off to one side of the shop, big enough for one tractor. I keep it around 60 degrees. Tractor fire right off no matter what the temps.

Allen, that snow looks pretty. I'm glad that we only get a little bit every other year in Georgia. Its 36 and we will have a high of 45 today.

It usually pops right off, but this is the first time I've ever needed it in a "crunch".

If it'll start, I'm gonna see if it will haul those big rounds on the 3-point. If not, guess it's hook up the trailer and haul the H back out to the farm......could end up being a very long day. :>(

Darned cows are probably out there bawlin' fer me right now.

Did I mention that I HATE winter? :>)

I'll bet she'll go. Had an old H that would start at -20 with 6 volt battery. 1 time with the choke out, turn the choke off and spin her again, and she'd go every time.
I do agree with you though, I HATE winter also! It was -12 with a -22 windchill in MN this morning.

The only time a guy can really appreciate gassers is in the cold weather , But yeah Boy hydraulics can and will freeze , I recall a power failure for serveral days back in 77' ....starting a magneto spark DC CASE by hand Cranking in minus 15 temps ,, then log chaining to a 830 Case diesel to get it started , and so on to the pickup , and the neighbors stuff to get rolling and dig OURASELVES out and feed and Warm the Workld

I spent a lot of time in the 60's as a kid spreading manure with the old farmall's in upstate NY in the winter - better get yourself a cab for the old M. Freezing your butt off will be a bigger problem than getting it to start.

Our old Farmalls did well in sub zero temps, but our old 53 international pickup got a lot of use in winter, always started in an unheated shed. And had a cab. Poor Pu lasted 30 years under those conditions year after year. No engine work that I knew of. But the cows got feed. A WD45 with a grapple hook, also got a lot of use in winter.

The old SM used to sit out all winter hooked to the spreader sitting under the manure chute. Started good most of the time. If I was worried about it I would park it out front of the barn on the hill. My home made heat housers sure were handy too.

The old girl has it easy now, she gets to sit in on the wood barn floor all winter.
