corn harvest pics

Howdy folks,

Well, it has been a year to remember for me and my wife. We bought our farm in February, put out all the crops (with more than our fair share of help from her dad), got married in July and moved into the old farmhouse, I started back to school in August, and we finished up harvest about 3-4 weeks ago. I'm all caught up in Christmas preparations now so my memory isn't so great. Anyway, it's been a busy but wonderful year. The crops turned out really good. With all the preparations for the wedding, reworking the house and all I didn't get to take a soil sample prior to planting so we went according to my father-in-law's suggestions (he's lived in the area all his life where I came from a different soil type and such). It all worked out great.

The cornfield stands ready for harvest. We got the beans done about 2 weeks before the corn.

Like a lot of folks this year we had some wet spots to contend with. A lot of it wouldn't have been a problem but a lot of years of neglect on this farm have left bad ditches and swampy spots that didn't have to be there. Got lots of drainage work to do in the future.

The 720 sits ready to start hauling corn. I used it the first day we did corn and then switched over to the R the next day. I had plans to use both but the pony motor on the R was having fuel issues that I fixed the next morning before we started.

Instead of the R we used my father-in-law's tractor. Dad even helped with hauling corn the first day.

Corn ran about 18% moisture in this field but got progressively higher as we moved to different fields. It was surprising because this was the wettest field.

View from the driver's seat of the 720. Definitely thankful for the warm weather that day.

We were very fortunate to have the help of my father-in-law. It wouldn't have been possible without him. We planted with his equipment and harvested with his combine (he's driving). If a deal I'm workin on right now goes through I should have my own combine to use next fall. Keepin my fingers crossed.

Day two of the corn harvest we didn't have dad's help to run wagons to the elevator so we enlisted my brother-in-law. The last picture is him and his dad doing some unloading on the go. I tried that for the first time the day before. I must say, it is not easy and it is especially hard with an old two cylinder with a hand clutch. Still fun though.

Dad snapped a picture of me while we were waiting for the combine to make another round. Definitely a happy camper. Harvest is done and now it's time to start doing winter maintenance and start a new restoration project. Got a rice model John Deere R that I've been wanting to get done for a while. Hope everyone has a very merry christmas. God bless.

Always enjoy pics of the farmers, fields, eqmt, & helpers.

Thanks again for putting food on my table!

May God bless and keep you and your family.

Nice photos.Good job getting the corn done.We finished a few weeks ago.Alot of folks not so lucky. How about plowing?

Sounds like you"re a busy guy!

Thanx for the pix! Farming is the only thing I have always wanted to do, but will probably never get to, as my Grandpa's place was sold 10 years ago.

Corn went what, 205? Did you break even? :)
Now all you need is a dog like Wrigley, and some rug rats that will in a few years, drive that nice 720. You aware of the "first time farmer" benefits?

looks like the start of a great life! enjoy it and be thankfull for it, you do need a few good built in hired hands (kids)

Howdy,

Actually, we ended up running $3.40 and $3.50 on the corn. Wasn't too much of a cut at the elevator. We did better than break even and I'm thankful for that. I'm sure there'll be "rugrats" in the future but for now I have a great family helpin me plus about 9 neices and nephews to enlist as well. I plan on bringin them over this summer for some hay fun. God bless.

Oops! I read that comment about "205" and thought you were talkin bout price. Sorry about that. We got around 150 bushels per acre. Not the best but it is southern ohio and on ground that has been abused for years. We had a visit from the lady that owned it from 1951 to 1991 when the guy we bought it from owned it. She told us that after her first husband passed away soon after they moved here, the farm was pretty much rented till 1991. After that it was abused even more (as evidenced from all the swamps, deep ditches, and overgrown fencerows). I have faith that it will be a great farm though with the right respect and attention. God bless.

Thanks for sharing, the pictures are great! Good for you in starting out like that - many people would love to do that but cant. That is my hope/plan at some point too! Thanks again.

Fantastic photos, thanks for taking the time to post them!

Looks like you're having a great time and long may ii continue.

Thanks again.
