2504 IH industral motor over haul and clutch replacement

I have a IH industeral tractor . when taking eng apart for overhaul found #1cycpush rods bent and connecting rod bent. It had 2quarts of water in pan. Isupposethe water caused the problem. The tractor has a lever to shift forward and reverse but you have to engage the clutch to put it in the gear you want it before using the foward and reverse lever. The year of the tractor is 1956 my guestion is when putting tractor in that mode I have to hold clutch in for about a 40 or 60 seconds is that the nature of this tractor or what could cause this ? Thanks

You had what they call is a hydrostatic lock when water or coolant gets on top of the piston
and you can't compress water. This will cause a bent rod. Hal

You do have to wait for the gears to stop turning, the clutch is not releasing completely. I would adjust the clutch per the manual unless you are taking the motor out for repair, in that case I would replace the clutch because of the labor involved and you will have it apart already. Bent push rods are comen because valves tend to stick from sitting, I have found four or five myself.
