What to tractor recommend

Hi all - Got a friend, lives in the hills about 50 miles away, is an aspiring farmer/squire/hobbiest and he wants a tractor, brush hog, loader and hoe. Has 60+ acres to work/play on. Only wants to spend 10k max. I'm a committed Deere guy, but in the interest of a worldly view, I'm asking for reccommendations on brands and size. By the way he doesn't do a lick of mechanical/wrench work. What do you think?

Since he is not planning to do his own maintenance he needs to bite the bullet and buy a new (or nearly newe) compact tractor. There are good deals to be found these days

From what your saying he needs 2 tractors not one. One with a loader and back hoe and the other one for all the other cores. I would do this for him. Take him to a number of tractor dealers/farms where he can learn and test drive tractors. To many people get hurt now days because they have no clue as to how and how not to run a tractor. I posted pictures down in the one about tractors flipping which shows what happens was a newbie on a tractor doing things wrong

I think that for $10k he will not find what he wants. Maybe he could spend $5k on a mowing setup and use the other $5k to hire the dirt work.

Guess I'd need to know how much and what work/play he is going to do on those 60 acres. Woodland, pasture or cropground? Pulling implements to work ground or baling hay? How much of that 60 will be mowed cause thats a lot of mowing?

I'm with old. I have a 2606 loader and hoe but no pto so 2 tractors are needed. Think about a skid steer for the loader and hoe work.

I would go on tractor house and look in your area for whatever color 4wd compact you like and get a used 3pt. hoe and shredder to go with it. Should be able to get around 25 HP, about 10-15 years old.

A friend of mine does all of those things with a Fordson Major Diesel that he picked up pretty cheap and overhauled (engine) himself. Your friend would have to find someone to do that. My friend's wife found a backhoe for it at an auction. He's got it all right there in one tractor. He did happen to run into a well maintained little Dexta that he couldn't resist so now he has that too. All for under 5K.

A tractor with a 3 pt. hitch in the 35 to 60 HP range would work for most of it but if he wants a hoe presents a problem. He could probably find a decent loader backhoe for 10K but couldn't run a bush hog. An MF 100 or 200 series tractor would be reliable and parts are easily available. Finding a used 3 pt. hoe would be difficult though. He needs to decide the main purpose of what he needs. Very hard to find one machine to do it all. Dave

Minneapolis moline Jet star 3 or U302 or Oliver 1550-1655. Both are nearly a dime a dozen and good solid work horses. Parts are easy to come by and can be found with front end loaders. The molines are easier to work on and are a good beginners tractor. He'll have fun no mater what he gets.
