onan power unit

im working on a onan power unit it runs a buck on back of a 1 ton truck i is a 2 clynder it will start and run for about 30 sec or so but alot of black smoke when it does run

Try placing the power unit in a half ton truck. That should reduce the smoke by 50%.

Seriously, is the carb choke plate wide open?Is the aircleaner clean? Have somebody tinkered with the idle and main jetting? Is the carb's float sunk or set too high?

it runs a bucket truck for like trimg tree you stand in i had the fuel bowl off it is clean inside

I had the same problem. It turned out to be a composite material that Onan made the carb float out of had swelled up due to new gas additives, and restricted movement. The new replacement floats are made of Brass.

Have you checked compression on both cylinders? You may have one dead cylinder and the other just can't handle the load without bogging down and kiling the engine. The Onans are notorious for throwing rods, etc and still running on one cylinder. I've heard of them having a rod sticking out of the block and still running. Personally I've got about 5 of them in the shop right now with broke rods, one with a broke rod and broke cam shaft together, and all of them were running when they came in the door. I might be wrong but ther symptoms sound familiar.

it has aelick fuel pump it quits wright away just like you shout it off just like the ing shout off but all you have is a rocher switch to start it and use the same switch to shout it off i think it something to with the ing part
