Counterweight

Looking for info how to build counterweight using 55 gal. barrel. I have a Massey 35. Wondering if I need to use full barrel, half, or other amount. Thanks, DJ

thes weights i've built were angle iron frame to make the three point part and platform for barrel.
how much barrel you need is going to be dependent on how much weight your tractor can handle...i'd use a 55 gallon and fill it partially...you can always add more later.

I started out with a full barrel of cement. It was way too much for my IH240. When it was mounted without the loader, the front end only had about 100 pounds on it. What I have now is a half barrel that is filled with field stones and such. If I had to do it again I would have a full drum and only fill it half full. The space on top would make a handy tool box.

If you have a loader on it you would be better off to have a back blade on and hang suit case weights on the blade. I have 2 barrels full of cement and do not use them because I found the back blade and suit case weights work far better plus you have the blade to use at the same time and a barrel is worth less as some thing to do work with

I used a plastic 55 gal barrel cut in half, built a 3 point framework to go inside towards the top, with a trailer hitch sticking out the back. Then I filled it with concrete with as much scrap iron as I could get in it, iron is much heavier that concrete. Should of left the sides stick up 6 inches higher than the concrete to act as a tool box, like someone else stated. Could of drilled holes around the edges for water to drain out. I think it weighs 6-700 lb, use it on our JD4600
