modify chisel plow

I bought a Case soil saver 9 shank with twisted 4" shovels. It plugs up with stalks terrrible. Anyone here been involved with modifying a 2 rank machine into a 3 rank, by adding another row of shanks, therefore spreading them out. Just wondering if anyone here has done it, what configuration you did, any ideas. I didn't get much on the imp. alley forum. But thanks anyways.

May not help you, but I pull an 11 shank 3-rank, and I still have to run the batwing over the stalks or they will gather so badly where the top of the shank twists away from the bar that they have occasionally built up to the frame before I caught them. Probably a fix for this, but I just take the extra time to clip them, could disk, more fuel there though. I guess I need a disk/chisel... supposed to cut that problem out. Good luck!

We run a 13 shack 3 row chisel. I have found it to work allot better using an extreme angle to the stalks. I cross rows near a 45 degree angle and it seems to work very well. Second pass is with a field cultivator traveling with the rows. Tears everything up and works well with the trash layers.

A disc/chisel is the ticket. You can drive through almost anything, stalks, foxtail or whatever. No need to disc or chop the stalk first. Around here a small one doesn"t fetch too much money. I use this one, not behind this tractor, but on a 2255 and it works quite well. We put a hand me down harrow on it and it works great.

That is exactly what I have, but it is orange. I believe Landoll made them for Case. It plugs terrible between the wheel and the next shank, I even disked a field and it still don"t help. I am running my disks a couple inches in the ground. I know these modern corn varites with corn borer, etc.. have a lot tougher stalk

Could there be something different with the spacing that would help? This is a Landoll also. I drive right through the thickest of residue from 200 bu. corn and it almost never plugs. Those discs do need to be in the ground plenty enough to size the material correctly. Hopefully there is something that helps. I ran this through 150 acres of good Dekalb corn with no discing or anything. Must be something that can be adjusted.

I think my stalks look heavier than in your pict. Nice Olivers by the way. It seems like I have the discs in the ground about at much as you do, yours looks like the machine is just slightly tilted down in the front. I think that is about where mine is. I got about 15 acres left than is really tough, i even disced it once. Might just have to wait until spring. How far from the wheel is the next shank mounted on the front row? That seems to be the tightest spot to get trash through. Nice chatting with you, where u from, I live near West Union in NE Iowa
