Any of you Canadian folks have experience with these? Starting to lean towards one because when in 2wd they are frt wheel drive. What I read over here and the mechanic that keeps me in line says they are real robust and simple. We are looking at diesel engine w/ 6sp trans model. Says they weren't released in the US. Any experience good or bad?

From what I've read, the diesel Nissans get around the same fuel mileage as a gas powered 2 liter Ford Escape with a 6 speed trans and both are primarily front wheel drive. 25-38 MPG (miles per Canadian Imperial gallons) which equals 21 - 32 MPG (miles per USA gallons).

Seems if you care about fuel costs, which fuel is cheaper? I like diesel better that gas in general, but not when it costs me more, and not if I can't work on it myself. I suspect the Escape is a better buy, but I don't know anything about the vehicle costs and how they compare in Canada.

I've driven my father-in-laws new 2 liter AWD Escape with a 6 speed and am very impressed with it.

There are Escapes here also (called Mavericks). Only rated for a 1.6 ton trailer though and I need at least 2 ton. Diesel is cheaper here for the Germans but costs me a little more than gasoline. I think (hope) the Nissan is a decent vehicle.

Back in 1986 I bought a 47 foot sailboat with a 100 hp nissan diesel. It was actually a 75 hp marinized and in the use waas a 100hp. The boat was 11 years old and had been run up and down the intercoastal for 9 years and to the Virgin Islands etc. I figureed the engine had abot 10.000 hours on it from the log books. I figured I would soon have to repower but the boat was a bargain because of the engine, I changed injectors and manifold , a solenoid and rewired to glow plugs. It was still going strong when I sold at in 2000 with atleast another 6000 hours on it. In all the years I ahad the boat I had to add i qt of oil for every 10 hours. I did find out that it was the same basic engine that was used in the IH Scouts There are still thousands of them in California used as off road vehicles. Henry
