Got 8 more chickens last week, giving us 12 total. build a big chicken yard 12x30, 6ft high chain link with PVC hoops over the top, completely covered in plastic chicken wire/ tarp. Seemed pretty tight. Last night something got in, but not in an obvious way- no holes. killed and took 4 birds- feathers and blood, but not a scratch on the others. looks like racoon tracks in the pen- do they eat chickens? need best way to knock him off, short of gun. explain the "coke and poison" deal to me!

Yes, they eat chickens. So do opossums.
About a month ago, I had to go over to mom's place and shoot a raccon that had gone in her chicken shed and killed one of her chickens. This was about 3:00 in the afternoon.

just get some blue marlin flybait and mix it with coke or pepsi, or any sweet drink. do not use diet drinks. works on coons, groundhogs, possums. I mix it in a aluminum pie tin.

I had to move our chicken shed up closer to the house so our trusty dogs could help patrole. Was loosing birds at a rate of 1 per night, am guessing it was a wessel as the neck was punctured but the body was mostly left alone.

It might be rats. Rats are voracious hunters and prey on younger birds. This past spring and summer we lost a bunch of youngsters (chicks) to rats, so we covered the coops with 1/2" hardware cloth (floors inside and outside where the wall meets the groud). Then we declared war on the rats. My wife and I took a bunch with a .22 (good target practice) and the rest were killed by our barn cats. We tried regular rat traps but they did not work, and we couldn't use poison because of the cats. So far, so good, haven't seen a rat in weeks...

Had a coon before take a chicken as well.

I found a simple way to use rat poison around cats, put a 20" by 20" or so piece of plywood on the ground, put the rat poison on it then put a milk create up side down over it. Then put a brick or something heavy on it to keep it in place. Rats and mice will go in but the cats cant fit. J

Coons will eat them, had that problem when I was a teen. Caught him in trap gave him a 22 shot in the head. No more disappearing chickens. Hal

Yes they will!!!! One was getting some of my grandmothers and I fixed him with a 20 gauge and a flash light. Skunks some times do but they prefer the eggs, easier to steal. Set out some live traps with a raw chicken thigh or a raw piece of beef severely tied down to make them work at it and set off the trap.

If its a meat eater. Inject a piece of meat with permanent antifreeze. Non selective--means dogs, cats, coons, possums. Its a "permanent" cure.
