Ok guy"s here"s what I"m lookin to do, I need more truck for around the farm, I have a 2000 F150 ex-cab shortbed 4x4 with a 5.4 v-8. A fella across town who needs less truck has a 1999 F-350 ex-cab long bed 4x4 with a V-10 both have about the same low miles. Even trade. I"ve never heard any good about the V-10, but not alot bad either, about as much as my 5.4L V-8 F150. I value your thoughts!
Thanks in advance!

I own a 2000 F-250 with a V-10 i have put 20000 miles on it since i have owned it with no problems. It has more power than my 96 F-250 with a 351 in it had. The only down fall is it likes its gas. I get 8mpg in town and 12mpg on the hiway. So i like the V-10 Just my 2 cents

only thing i can add is other than passing everything but a gas pump you better have plenty wide open spaces around barnyard...i had a extended cab/long bed for a wrecker once upon a time...it was like driving a super tanker in a bath tub in town...it was great on the hiway tho.

I have a 2004 F250 with a V-10. I get an average of 10 - 11 mpg (depends on foot pressure).I get same mileage whether loaded or empty.I tow a gooseneck trailer once in awhile and I like the power it has. Only thing I don't like is manifold bolts are snapping off, 56,000mi, and Ford wants about $1,000.00 (their guess) to repair it. Guess I'll have to do it myself!!

I had an '01 F250 reg cab, V-10, 3.73LS axle, with the 4x4 off road and overload springs and it would get 12-14mpg everyday, 16mpg highway and 8-10mpg pulling the gooseneck. Always had plenty of power and never had any trouble. Had 56k miles when I traded for '05 F250 6.0 powerstroke, mileage and power were about the same, just higher maintenance costs. Now I have the 6.4 powerstroke, mileage and power is better than the other two. I have been happy with all three. I still miss the V-10 though.

I have a '01 F350 ex.cab, long box with the V10, 3.73's, and 5-speed. Good combo. About 2 more mpg. than the carb'ed 351/3.73/4-speed reg. cab it replaced, and WAY more power. Around 15 highway. Had it 11 months so far, and happy so far, too.

I'm not sure but I was thinkin the V-10 is basically the same as a 5.4 but with two more cylinders. Maybe someone here knows for sure. I imagine that would be a good trade for both of you. good luck!

I"ve had that happen to my old "01 F-150 with the 5.4 twice, and once in my "05 F-250 with the 5.4. I hear a lot of 5.4 V8"s around here with exhaust leaks, so I figured it was a common problem. I never priced having it fixed at Ford, but alway"s wondered what they"d charge. I haven"t had much trouble fixing them yet. I pull off the wheel, and wheel well, and use a few universal"s and extensions on a ratchet, and the nuts usually back right off. The studs that broke off came out with vise grips, but I was fortunate enough that they broke high enough to leave room for visegrips.

Thats the only trouble I"ve ever heard about these engines. I wondered if I had my foot in it too much pulling my trailer over the mountain here. Thought the manifold got too hot. Thats my theory anyway. I"m trying to take it easy now, we"ll see how that goes.

5.4 had sparkplugs that pop out because of insufficient threads in head. Big job to repair. Not sure what year.

all the old work trucks were 350s with the v10. almost all of them were plain wore out at 200K. If I remember right the bearings consistently went out at 200k. Not to say that the men driving them were gentle. One time our truck starting smoking 50 miles from the shop, so the driver floored it and never looked back. Made it to the shop, engine was toast. If they were my trucks i wouldn't have let them touch them. Overall the highway mileage wasn't crippling- I think it may have been 12 or 14. Power was lost though as the miles went up. However, just having a 1 ton as opposed to a 1/2 will make all the difference in the world as a farm truck, regardless of engine. Thatd be a fair trade just for the upgrade in capacity, at least I think so.
