Old Skidloaders

What are the pros/cons of the older, belt drive skidloaders? Are they more simple than a hydrostatic unit?

I'd kinda like to find a small, (35-40 hp) "fixerupper" unit someday....Just to make my wife happy!

It'd probably have to be a CASE!

Thanks,
Glenn F.

haven't worked on many but the belts only turn the hydro pump so mostly just a belt or 3 difference and engine placement. The older Case unit we had in the shop was not belt driven and seemed like a real good unit. I own a 94 Toyota SDK-7 and it is a good unit. I like the all hand controlled units but my Toyota is hand and feet.

The older Case 1500-1700 series were indeed variable speed belt traction drive with two forward clutches and two reverse clutches and the pump was direct drive off the angle gearbox. The hydraulic variable speed sheave was somewhat of a problem as the units aged and cost to repair was excessive if good used can not be found. Occasional chaincase servicing was required for clutch adjustment and drive chain tension both to the main sprockets and the clutch sprockets. Personally I would look for a little later Hydrostatic unit. If bought in good condition and serviced properly you will be much more pleased with one of those both from a operational standpoint and durability. mEl

thanks for your response as I said I have only worked on a few of these and had no real knowledge of the older units. Variable belt drive I understand and don't think I would put much faith in the design.

A friend of mine has a Bob cat 373 which has a 14HP koler in it and for its size it sure is nice and beat the #$%^ out of a shovel. Sure wish it was mine instead of his. Funny how when it is on my place it will run when ever I want it to but when t is at his place it will only run when I go over there and fix it
