Chisel Plows

I was wondering what the horsepower requirements where for a chisel Plow? How much Horsepower per shank?

Or what could a Allis 190XT series 3 Pull? I live in Northeast Ohio. Thanks.

I also heard 10 hp per shank. I pulled an 11 shank with a 100 hp 856 Farmall, and a 13 shank with a 130 hp 1086.

Depends on the soil, and if it's been chiseled before. I did some that had never been chiseled with the above outfits, and it was all full throttle, low gear work. After the ground had been chiseled a few times, I could roll along in low fourth.

If you live in my back yard with the humps and bumps we have here in N. E. Buckeye then ya had best up the H P requirements a bit and drop a shank. The 190 may pull 8 but not at the speed you need to run at . and also it depends on the chisel plow . and the points that ya have on it . My 806 has all it wants with 7 set at 10 inches and that takes a 1000 lbs on the nose to keep it on the ground and run in 1st high with the stick ahead . And if it is a DMI five shank with the tiger points set to 14 inches then even a 3788 with duals and all the weight we could hang on it along with 5 turns on the screw was not enough tractor .

most ppl say 10 horsepower per shank but in northeastern ohio i would say 15. I was on a 806 and we had a 5 shank but then again we were going up and down some big hills. But that 806 was going full throttle and it was under a big load.

Gene, here in auglaize 10 HP per shank will barely move it, Your soil is a bit lighter than mine, 4000 Ford rated at 52 but putting out 60 on dyno some of the ground I had would pull 5 shanks on 12" spacing ok but not on some of the other ground, That 5 shanks would possibly have worked with the 5000 in the heavier ground but never tried it at home but on the lighter ground could get by with the 7 shanks on the unit, the 5000 was too wide for the 5 shanks.

You need to be thinking 20 HP per shank. You need speed for a chisel plow to really do it's job right. I have a 250 HP Steiger with a JD 712 disc chisel with 13 shanks with 4 inch twisted shovels. I can run 10 inches deep at 6 1/2 MPH in most soil, but in tough, wet sod I will be at 5 1/2 MPH. Smaller shanks and shovels can pull easier. Whatever you choose, you might want to try to pull it in your conditions before you get one. Wayne

At least fifteen to twenty hp per shank if you really intend to be effective. I pulled a five shank having spikes with 80 hp and it was plenty of load. Three or four inch twists would pull harder.
