took a load of corn to elevator had 18.2 percent moisture got docked 14.5% isnt that a little high seems like elevator is making more than i am off the crop

3.2% moisture reduction to 15% costs 3.9 cents a point or 12.48 cents. Along with that there's shrink, 1.18% per point for moisture lost which is 3.776% and typically .22% shrink for handling loss like grinding in the augers and spillage and stuff like that to make the shrink 1.4% per point total or 4.48% shrink. That's what it takes here. So the dry bushels that they pay on are 4.48% fewer and then they charge 12.48 cents a bushel for drying. Then if its light corn they dock for light weight, and foreign matter and crunched corn. Some days it seems like its a wonder they take any corn at all this year.

Geralds math is right on. I came up with 29.2 cents per bushel. Actually some drying charges are on the wet bushels so the drying charge would be a little higher. I averaged a 45 cent drying charge this year on 20.5% corn and about 2 cents per bushel for light test weight. You also didn't say if it was a straight cash sale or not. If you had a dump charge it could have been another 12 to 16 cents per bushel.

So, your charges may be a touch high, but probably not far out of line. Your settlemant sheet should give you a breakdown on the charges.

In the early 50s the Gov helped the farmer install bins so the farmer could control his own corn. Here we are 50yrs later and complain about elevator prices and problems so what do you expect when you take wet corn to the elevator.

Elevator Operators live in the real world while Farmers are still living in the world of debt and hope and despair. This is why I quit in 1971 before I got in any deeper. It was the same then as now and then the addition of a blight which devastated the crop in northern Ill. sent many like me looking for an Auctioneer.

And many of us never found corn that dry. I had a couple loads at 32-34% moisture, they were sghort on corn & offered a discount on the drying. He asked if he should mail the check? I said if there is any to mail, I might owe some at that moisture & test weight!
