Best for the hydraulics on the "old" machines?

Which hydraulic fluid should be used on the older machines? I have a 1948 Brockway and I'm having issues with the fluid getting foamy .... probably from air getting mixed into the solution because the reservoir return is at the top of the cylindrical tank and is above the fluid level.

It's a 60 year old machine ...... and now it has troubles. Did they use heavier fluid than the all season 20 wt. now sold ?

This afternoon I was telling a friend that I'd put in some of the Tractor Supply iso 83 heavy hydraulic fluid and he told me that the older machines simply used 10 wt. oil.

Would the motor oil work better ?

Best for the hydraulics on the "old" machines?
