oil consumption again

Anyway, talked to the kid today that did the work. He said to use it through the winter and, if not better in spring when I can afford the time, he'll redo everything free labor and I only buy the parts that I didn't buy before (he'll buy the ones I just replaced new). It seems a little better though. Ran it about 4 hours today and no noticeable loss. He said that the rings still needed to seat. Asked about why everything wasn't replaced and he said "trust me". We'll see, but I think he's pretty good.

If I had major problems, wouldn't I have excessive blowby and suffer as far as power?

For the last 20 years, I'd buy 10-15 year old cars (150+k miles) and drive em til the repairs would cost more than a replacement. I always changed the oil and used slick50 (for startup protection) and castrol 20w50 oil. Think that would be a smart move for my tractor?

Thanks, Dave

Hey Folks,
details first:
1964 McCormick D326 (German made farmall)
3cyl Diesel (DD-111) motor

Going through quite a bit of oil the last few weeks. Rod bearings had to be replaced because I didn't realize it and ran out of oil. Anyway, engine work is all done and things are OK EXCEPT ......... Starts a little harder (takes longer) and smokes pretty bad for a little bit. Runs fine after it warms up. Looks like a classic valve seal problem, but goes through a bunck of oil. No oil in water or water in oil, no visible leaks, doesn't smoke after it runs a minute or so.
Should I be looking somewhere else? Is there a wonder drug that will tighten the valve seals to get me through the winter (need it daily in winter and can't afford downtime)?

Thanks for any tips,

dave, run diesel oil in it. 15-40 Rotella, or Delo. (other major manufacturers oil is also OK. Diesels need different "vitamens" in the oil than gas. JimN

Hello dave2,
Sounds to me that the mechanic is pretty sure of what he did.
Yes it will use some oil durimg break-in.
He replaced only the parts that he so fit,
trust him. If it is going to persist burning oil, he will take care of it as he said.
I'm betting you won't need anything else. Just run it, use it but don't abuse it.
My recommendation is for you to use Mobil diesel
oil. You won't be sorry.
No Delon or Rotella T. I've drained both of those brands for lack of normal oil pressure with Mobil delvac oil with a 10# increase in oil presuure.

Guido.

If you had a major problem it would be smoking. If he put in new rings it could take it a little while to seal up.Smoking would be a sign of a broken ring but it could also be a lot of other things. You will want to change the oil soon and use good Diesel oil.Theres nothing wrong with Shell Rotella. If it smokes a lot and burns oil after youve ran it a couple of weeks its probably not going to get better.Smoke by its self could be lots of things depending on what color, but burning oil is a sure sign there is something wrong.

I put rings and bearings in a Massy 1080 Diesel and the farmer just used it as a loader tractor and it never stopped using oil, and I could not talk him into doing fieldwork with it. He was never happy and I still think he is an idiot.(33 years ago)

I don't have any heavy work for it but it gets plenty of road running and moving water tanks/round bales.

If nothing else, get it out on the road and find a good hill and hit it hard. Then keep doing it. It needs to get hot and pull. Don't necessarly lug the snot out of it... but I probably would.
Babying it will do it no good.

On the other hand, if he didn't re-ring it and put all else to spec, there's probably nothing you're ever going to do to it that will ever help short of rebuilding it again.

Just because he's confident of what he did... doesn't really mean much. Many an education was bought and paid for the hard way on that road... mine included.

Break it in like a brand new engine. Vary the throttle, run up to operating temp, no prolonged full throttle. Oil change always with filter at 5 and 10 hours, regular interval after that, oil is cheap and I have done mine every 10 hours for the past year. No oil additives, check levels often. The smoke will clear after only a few hours of running when the rings get seated in. You should have no significant blow-by after a few hours and no oil dripping from the engine.
