Growing tomatoes in buckets

Someone back in the spring either on this site or the N site asked about growing tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets up side down and several of us told of our experiences. Well this year I was going to plant two upside down and hang them by the shop. But the spring was so wet that I had tomato that needed transplanting and no where to put them. So I put a couple in the top of each hanging bucket, and the have done really well. They are still green and bushy one plant has 18 tomatoes and several blooms on it still here in the middle of Nov. While the ones that did get in the garden have been done for over a month.

I tried the upside down tomatoes in buckets (four) this year. The two cherry tomatoes did fine. The regular ones not so good. I did get enough for a few sandwiches though. I don't think I will try any more. TDF

We tried the hanging ones, What a joke. Bt the time I bought the baskets, and mulch, I had enough money invested to buy tomatoes for several years to come. They didn't work for us.I have the hanging baskets. I will make someone a good deal on them. Stan

I tried making hanging buckets...the freaking wind whipped my plants to death. I put them on the ground and put plants in the top of the bucket and didn't break any records but had tomatoes all year. That hanging crud is no good for where I live.

My wife tried that this summer also. All she did was carry water all summer for a few small tomatoes. Those in the garden did much better.

Pot plant containers are [here] a dime a dozen, I have better results with them because I tend to water the pp's more often than the garden area. They are portable so can be moved out of the wind.

I tried one in a small hanging plant basket. Put a chocolate smelling little plant in the top for decoration. The tomato plant died. I don't think I had a big enough pot for root space and then probably didn't keep it watered and fertilized like it needed. One time the wind blew it down and the pot had one big massive root ball in it. Might have been that chocolate plant. Funny thing was that the tomato plant made a U turn so it would grow upwards.
