Needing information on geting more horsepower for tractor pulling I have a 1950 oliver with a GMdiesel 4-53 .Any information would be appreciated.

I believe it was 1958 when GM introduced the 53 series. Is this a retrofit or do you have a 4-71 or 4-51?

Anyway, assuming you have a 4-53, there are alot of ways to boost power. The easiest is larger injectors or changing from 2 valve to four valve head. Turbos with attendant modifications make a big difference.

Go to the Detroit Diesel forum at Yahoo. There are some performance guys over there.

To increase HP on the two stroke Detroits the first thing to do is change the injectors. I"ve got an OEM spec book that lists all of the different combinations origionally made, so if I knew what injector you"ve got I could tell you which ones would boost your HP above what you"ve got now.
The next step woult be to install a turbo and possibly an aftercooler. If you install a turbo you"ve then got to rebuld the blower and install turbo rated (double lipped) seals. Now if the blower has been rebuilt recently it should have turbo seals since Detroit discontinued the standard seals some years ago so turbo seals are included in all current rebuild kits.
On some models there were two different drive ratios for the blower but I believe with those the injectors had to be correct for each variety there too.
These things are pretty much all you can do in the way of producing more power within OEM specs. Like another post suggested there are guys that are really into this sort of thing that may have some "trade secrets" for producting more power outside of off the shelf parts.... Good luck.

A little confusing, 1950 would be the tractor model number, not the year produced which would be mid 60's. The model 1900 had a 2 valve 4-53, while the 1950 had a 4 valve 4-53.

Injectors were N 50's. Do you know where I can Purchase these and what size I will need.I appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you

I found out what kind of injectors I have in my 1950 GM Diesel Oliver, N50's. Thanks for your help.

Alright if your looking for more power injectors and turbo will help but the turbo won't do much without the right sleeves in the engine. Also the. Fire ringson the pistons are different on a turbocharged detroit than ones just with the blower. Even the blower is different! You can also advance the timing...
