2005 ford escape?

In looking for a vehicle, I just came across an escape 4x4 w/ 3.0 automatic. 85k with 100% dealer services. Anyone have one comparable?
I'm confused about what the guy was telling me about the 4wd. Said it was an AWD with a button for 4wd. Does that mean it has like a limited slip for both axles then push the button to lock all four? Also, can someone tell me the difference in the same vehicle with and without a tow package? Is it just the hitch and lights or is there an extra trans cooler?

Thanks, Dave

My in-laws buy a new Escape every two years. They had a 2005 with the 3 liter V6. It's basically a Mazda and very well built other then nuisance "check engine" lights coming on around every 20K miles. It's all-wheel drive, but there is a button to make it more aggressive for snow and ice. It makes the front to rear differential slip less. The just a got a new one with the four-cylinder engine. Has almost as much power as the 3 liter V6 and they've gotten 30 MPG with it. The 2005 with the 3 liter V6 got a best of 25 MPG.
I don't know exactly what comes with the tow-package. All of their Escapes were ordered with it - but the newest one didn't even have a rear hitch on it when it came in. They had to bring it back to the dealer later for the install - so it sounds like there wasn't much to the option. The dealer claimed Ford sent the hitch as a separate part and they sent the wrong one. No mention of an exta cooler and this Escape has the new 6 speed automatic.

Hey, you're not in northern Michigan, are you? My in-laws 2005 only had 85K miles on it and they traded it in to the local dealer in Alpena. 3 liter V6, automatic, with tow package. I wanted to buy it but did not want to match the money the dealer offered them. It was pretty high.
Typical "old people" vehicle. Very well cared for.

No, but just curious, what do they go for in the States. This guy's asking 10k KBB is 10800. Just got pics and it looks real clean.

My in-laws had been talking about donating their 2005 Escape to a church, instead of trading in. I then told them I'd buy it when it came time to trade. But, then the local Ford dealer offered them over $6000 for it and I passed it up. I was expecting it to be more in the $4000 range.

Real nice rig, but I'd much rather have the four cylinder version just for fuel mileage reasons. We take a long trip every year together. Four adults, one kid, and a dog all crammed into their Escape. Got almost 31 MPG on the last trip in that new Escape which is pretty impressive. The 2005 3 liter V6 did the same trip and same load at 25 MPG. My father-in-law (retired Ford engineer) keeps a log of every drop of gas used. That 2005 Escape had a lifetime fuel mileage average of 17.5 MPG which is still pretty good, considering they do a fair amount of stop-and-go city driving. Maybe I'll get their new Escape if I live long enough.

when it is in AWD there is some slipping in the power transfer between the front and rear driveshafts alowing the front driveshaft to spin at a different rate than the rear when going around turns on pavement. I am assuming that when you would put it in 4wd, it will act like a regular transfer case and lock the front and rear driveshafts to the same speed, which would be used on very low traction surfaces.

We just bought a 2003 Escape V-6. 42000 miles on it. Paid $11K out the door for a local dealer. Good little rig for around town and short trips. I would go claustrophobic in it on day long drives. Good power for its size. Fair fuel economy. Tows a SMALL trailer (2000#) well. I would not try anything much bigger. You feel the small trailer back there.
Noisiest vechicle (road noise)I have ever owned. Almost no noise insulation in the back.I put sound deadening all over the rear section and it helped a lot.

Here is the NADA price for the states. You can go to their web site and look up Germany if you like.

Ford tow packages have an oil cooler but I have added an extra one anyhow. They are easy to install. The tow package cooler is usually on the inside of the radiator. I just install another on the outside and hook them up from the inside to outside and then back to trans. Reason for installing extra one is because I lost a transmission at 88,000 miles and wanted more protection. Henry

Get that thing out there an romp on the go pedal. And I mean romp on it! If that transmission squeaks, don't even think about it. I had a 2006 for a company car. Torque converter went to full lock up. Push the brake pedal it would kill the engine. There is no insulation in the floor. It is LOUD. Rotate the tires every 3000 miles if you can. Every Escape that someone from my compay has driven has cupped the inside of the tires.
I have a 2008 right now with 86K. I put 90K on the 2006. I drove the wheels off them.

I am not kidding about the tires and the noise though. And, don't think you can fold the rear seat down and drive without ear plugs. The noise is 10 times worse with the rear seat folded down.
