Dear Lads
To day I went to see a case 1070 case
When I got to the dealer the dealer told me it was traded in three years ago and has not been running in a long time. So after finding some good batteries we tried to start it but as it being so cold at 20f it would not start with out a shot of starting fluid.
It runs good no smoke but some blow by when cold although it has 4000hours
The think that scares me is when you back up it wines and when you let out the clutch it revs up and than back down is this okay?
The dealer is asking $7900 with new batteries is this a good deal?
Thanks matt

Matt, the revving of the engine or "surge" that I call it is normal. Im told when this happens, the trans. has to stop spinning and then go the other way. Someone correct me if I am wrong on that. The tach will jump a little anytime the clutch is depressed. You didnt say, but Im assuming that it is a powershift? 7900.00 sees a little steep to me, even with new batteries. Im thinking 5-6 would be right, and even then it would have to be decent.

I would say considerable whining in reverse would be normal as those planetery gears are really spinning then. I think you would almost need to compare it to another or have someone familiar with the Case power shift give you a good answer. I know one thing, you never want to leave them in reverse for too extended a period of time like backing down that half mile drive way with a rear snow blower. Lubrication is not good in reverse. The lurching and snorting while clutching is normal as you are applying opposing clutch packs to stop trans shaft for shifting range transmission.

The whinning is normal as is the surge. I have one I'd sell for half that if you are close enough. Heck, I'll even rebuild the engine for ya as it is due for an overhaul.

I bought a white one with 6800hours, ac,ps, hub duals, schwartz qt loader, and rock box in average shape, tires were poor for 6k, we have had several 70 series and they all have some blowby even though they didn't use oil and started and pulled good

Sounds like the trans and engine are just fine to me if you are looking at a powershift. I have a 1070, 970 and 2094. They all surge when you step on the inching pedal ( what you call a clutch). Whine in reverse is typical. You cannot leave the powershift in reverse when doing stationary pto work. Don't think I would pay more than 6 a good one. Those 451 engines have excellent low end torque.

Hey JoeBob, do you have ground near Wanatah, IN? Saw a New Holland and a 20 or 2290 sitting behind a barn on US 30 and thought it might be you.

Wish I had ground over there, we sit on sand and gravel here! Oddly enough we do have two New Holland combines and a 2290, 2390, and/or 2590.
