Just woundering how you guys make it work at home. I'v done it befor, for two years I think it took a few years to get back to normal around the house with the kids and the wife. Any ways work is slowing down here have a chancs to go back on the road 3 weeks out 4 days home moneys good. How do you guys do it.

I work from home over the net. Kids are gone though so no problem there.

Of course some mornings that floor is cold walking accross the room to my computers.

A hard life but someone has to do it :)

I haven"t done much away from home in close to a year, but know more is coming up when the economy straightens out. Even then going out of town I was always home every weekend. The main thing I found to make it work was good communicsation between me and my wife.To aid in this it"s nice to have a good cell phone plan with no long distance charges, and a home phone plan with unlimited long distance for a set price, or something like that. One place I worked I had no cell service at the motel but did at the job site. When possible I always called and let my wife know when I left the job and headed to the motel or barring that she always knew I"d be in the room after a certain time so she could just call the hotel.

As a part of all of that I usually tried to make sure I was at the motel and able to call or be called before my little girl went to bed so I could talk to her and at least tell her good night.

Beyond that I don"t really know any real secrets to making it work. If you have the needed trust and communication between you and your wife, and continued communication with the kids.....and they can all understand what your doing is necessary and even more so for them, then you shouldn"t have any problems.

I normally work a 24 hr. shift every 3 days, so the family is somewhat used to me being gone a little. Now that I'm in Iraq, I keep in touch with email and I can do live video with Skype. The problem with Skype is that I'm eight hours ahead so on weekdays they aren't home till after 4 or so. that means I have to wait up until midnight or later to call. Calling often helps, but also having friends to help out with little emergencies when you're gone is nice too. And a little faith in the Man upstairs help out a lot.

depends on your family i guess i work in town but i work swing shift quite a few 12 hour days i work 10 days on 4 off which is fine when kids aint in school but this time of year it sucks i get 4 days a month with my family and then its usually catch up so dont get any quality time together sleep for me interferes with family time im sleeping when they are having family time but i got to sleep some or i wont come home i benn doing this 7 years (not real long i knowbut my youngest is 4 then 8 then 13 so im missing golden years) i think if i do this another year i wont be married anymore id take a big pay cut to work a normal job if there was any hiring but u know how that is

The first time I worked out of town for two yr I know what you mean. Kids were litte I wasen't there did the phon thing wife quit talking I quit talking it was like they were in another world I'm out there making dicsions on the job that meant saving 10,20 thousand. Deadlines over runs subcon that couldn't do ther thing because someone else was in the way or haden't even got started. The last thing you wan't to think about is were's she been.

Well one thing I won't be that far from home, but at 500 to 800 you might as well be. You do alot of praying.
