farmall h start

ok, so i have a farmall h that was down for like a month because when ever i started it the gas would run on high and there was no lowering it so i worked on it and then when i turned it on to see if i fixed it was still running on high but then it shut of and i couldnt get it started again, so i just came from putting new points and condenser on it and when ever i try to start the tractor it just goes rar then i let off on the starter and press it and it goes rar rar ect it has allways done this, and when i know its gonna start it goes rararararararar at a faster rate each rar, but now it wont even do that rararararar, it just goes rar and then i let go and push again it goes rar rar does anyone know what the problum is?
(brand new battery)

My guess is you need to clean the battery terminals and charge the battery.Maybe look and see if it has any fuel in the tank.

well u see we got a brand new battery and charged it and everything and the things are clean but it did the same thing with the old battery so i know its not that, and there is gas in it

Sounds like governor issues, since you said when it starts it runs "high and there is no lowering it". Like the linkage, (pipe), between governor and carb isn't installed right.

Sounds like bad battery cable(s) to me. They can look good on the outside and be cracked inside. Might also be a switch going bad. Best would be to check resistance with an ohm meter, but if the cables and switch look beat you may as well replace them.

Get new ones (they don't cost much), clean all connections, especially the ground where it bolts to the tractor and the connections to the starter switch.

what i am talking about is did you have the carb off?do you have spark now?your wording of events is just terrible , eg.(the gas would run on high.)do you mean the engine stayed reved up? did you install the governor shaft to carb in its correct slot? what are the points and timing set at? what are the carb adjustments set at?sounds like your green as a john deere.

Those things are "battery terminals"
Look carefully at the wires (cables) that are connected to the terminals. What color are they? If they are red, it's most likely they are cheap auto cables. You need to get a set of cables made from 00 gauge wire. It's BLACK. An implement dealer or good welding or fabrication, maybe diesel engine shop can make some up for you. Kinda spendy though but it's just gotta be done on the old 6V systems.

Gordo

Alright then you should check both ends of each cable and make sure they arent loose or corroded on the other end.I am leaning toward something with your governor. If all it does is go wide open if thats what you mean. You might want to get a manual if you need to work on your governor.TSC, Orschelns,Farm and Home stores and International dealers should have a manual or you can find them on line, maybe on this website. Also look at your linkage to the carburetor is it moving when you move the lever?Did it come unhooked from the carburetor and have the butterfly stuck open? Also I have had those battery cables that you get at auto parts stores that are made in China be corroded up inside of where the end goes on and you cant see it.It will get worse and worse and make you think all kinds of things are wrong but finally no current will go through it at all.You can hook jumper cables to the starter directly, but it sounds kind of like yours is turning over and wont start?Or did you mean it tries to turn over and cant?If you have starting fluid you might give it a very small snort at the inlet of the carburetor for air while cranking to see if its a gas problem. If it hits on staring fluid your fuel line is probably full of rust or something or you have got a slug of water in it.Maybe you have more than one problem.

ok, so what i did is i was changeing the headers and inorder to get to the one bolt i had to take the carb off and to do that i had to take that rod that goes to the carb off, and then i put the heads on and attached everything to the carb and then when i would start it, the engine would run full throtle, then one time i thought i fixed it buy taking the rod thing and lining it in in the slot on the carb and turned it on and it was still full throtle but it died out on me and there was no starting it after that, now it wont even roll over more than twice at a time

it will roll over like once then stop, then i have to let off on the starter butten and press it again and it will roll over twice ect but it wont stay rolling over, i mean it did this before go once then twice then once ect then finaly it would start to rapedly roll over then fire, but now its only doin it twice max

A month or so ago, my H wouldn't respond to the throttle setting. Might run fast with the throttle in the idle position, or vice versa and wouldn't speed up when the throttle was pulled back.

Turned out the linkage inside the governor was severely gummed up and sticking. Took the cover off the governor, soaked it in WD40 to free it up, blew air through the tube to the cylinder head and put the cover back on. No more problem.

You need to measure the battery voltage at the starter when someone else try's to start the engine. Hal

You probably need new 00 battery cables with soldered lugs. Have your battery load tested. If your battery voltage is dropping too much while cranking there won't be enough voltage for your ignition if this tractor has battery ignition. Hal

I have an H and when it does that either the battery is run down or the battery cable was bad on it like I described before.I changed that this spring and now it cranks over fast if the battery is charged up.Those cables that you buy at auto parts places arent very good now days.Like others say get some made with big cable. If you have good cables then your starter might need rebuilt. If your starter is worn out it can act like that, but usually it doesnt get better when you are trying it,but it will get worse until it wont work.Hows the throttle linkage?Hooked up or binding somehow?Does the choke work? You can jump the starter by hooking jumper cables to the starter.Hook the positive to the hot cable on the starter and the hot cable on the positive of whatever you jump it with then hook the negative to a ground somewhere on the starter like a bolt that holds it on.If the starter is good it should crank fast,if you switch is on it should start if its getting fire to the plugs and gas to the cylinders.Make sure its out of gear before you do that so it doesnt fire up and run over you.

im just saying what i did to cause this, i was changing the heads and then i had to take of that rod that went to the carb and i think that might have something to do with it but im more concerned about it starting

If the throttle is back then its wide open, forward and its idling on mine.So if yours is hooked up and pushed forward is the butterfly in the carburetor closed?Or not?If its not closed then thats probably why its wound up when you get it started. If its closed or nearly closed and still wound up when you get it started then its the governor maybe. Now for your starter barely turning over, did you try to jump the starter at the hot post on the starter? If you did jump it,did it turn over good?If it turned over good then one of your cables is bad, probably corroded up inside of an end where you cant see it.That would cause a problem like that or even loose, dirty or corroded connections on your cables on either end,or on the one that goes to the starter,on the starter button,or even the starter button could be wore out.Probably more that I havent thought of yet.Jumping the starter directly bypasses all of those problems to see if your starter is good or not.
