getting my 640 back to the barn.

I was wrapping up the last 2 acres of scrub on my place with the bush hog today. I turned off the tractor to clean the weed seed out of the radiator an she would not restart. Several weeks ago, I replaced the battery, wiring harness, solenoid and new brushes in the starter (6V system). She"s been running great up to now. I"ll get one click out of the solenoid and nothing more. Could my starter be stuck? I walked back and got my voltage tester. I get 6.4 volts from the battery. With the key on, I get 6.4 volts from the starter button to the copper connection on the starter. However, when I push the button, it drops to .4 volts. Thanks for any thoughts.

I would first pull the starter to make sure it wasnt stuck. Then try again and wherever the cobbecyion is warm thats where the cable is bad.

With the key "off". Put the tractor any gear, reverse might be better, grab the rear tire and try rocking the tractor. If the starter is stuck, this might free it up. As others said a dirty, loose, or poor connection, is a likely culprit.

Forgot to add that where the starter is mounted to the bell housing is a good place for NO contact(this is the ground). A good wire brushing on both surfaces will make a world of difference.

I had an "M" that would do that. Had to loosen the bolts on the starter, just loose enought to give it a shake. The starter drive was hanging up, it would pull the voltage down as you said but of course could not turn. Of course it needed a little work, but this might get you back to the house so you can make the proper repair ) gobble

99% chance it is a simple fix. Bet you have a battery cable loose or dirty and that is why you get one click. It sparks and that is all it takes to get that click and after that spark you loose all battery power. One of my 8Ns did that yesterday. Cleaned battery cable and away it went

My Super C wouldn't even tried to roll it off acted just like the engine seized but when I took the starter off the bendix was dirty and dry few minutes to clean it and it starts right up

This is the direction I"m leaning. I"ve had the starter off recently - just pull out far enough to shake it loose. My bush hog"s on the ground, so I don"t think there"s any way I could rock it.
When I redid the wiring, I cleaned all connections well, so it"s hard to imagine I have a problem there. It will be a few days before I can get back to it, but I will report back my findings when I do.

Went to my place today. Put the battery back on (I had a load test run on it. It was fine). Gave the starter and solenoid a few sharp raps and it started right up. Thanks for all comments, guys.
