I have 380k on mine with no major problems. I have heard IH has rated the engine for at least 400k before a rebuild. I heard of one guy who had 780k on his before it quit. Once had a shop truck that had around 350k before we got rid of it.

To get that kind of mileage the engine will need to be maintained - something older diesel pickups just don't get a lot of. Glowplugs go bad and someone starts shooting ether in the intake and wonders why the engine is shot at 200K. Or the coolant isn't kept fresh, fuel filters are allowed to stay half clogged, injectors leak fuel into the oil pan diluting it. All are basic maintenance items that are ignored when a truck hits its second or third owner who's short on money.

mine is comming up on 130k... virtually no problems to this point and no indications of any in the near future. This truck still runs like it did the day we bought it (after being fully "broken in"... maybe even better!!) One of the reasons I bought the Ford was BECAUSE it had the 'binder engine. I spent 20+ years in the military and got hauled all over the world in trucks and busses that had that same basic engine (although non-turbo and fewer cubes). I had friends in the motor pool and asked them about those vehicles... they all spoke of how dependable they were. I've been told by my local parts guy and a couple of mechanics that, if properly cared for, a stroker should easily run through 300k and beyond... I'm convinced they're right. And... the rest of the truck is holding up just fine. I plan to keep this 'un til they take my driver's license away! ...D

I have a 2000 F250 psd with 150,000 miles on it, No major problems so far, just a alternator, and water pump. J

All I'm going to add is if the truck you're looking at is a 6.0L diesel, you better have some reserves to keep it running. The 6.0L has been a huge money loss for Ford. The 7.3's were good engines. The 6.0 is a sad excuse.

FORD is introducing another "new" diesel engine. This time, it is designed and built by FORD, not IH.
As I recall, the advertising from the past has been that each new one was "improved", blah, blah, blah.
I wonder why FORD does not warrant the diesel much longer than the gas if it is so good and we know they last longer.
I had a 7.4. Ran great until around 65,000 miles. Started skipping. FORD dealer said it was the high pressure oil pump (powers the injectors). They replaced it and nothing changed. It almost shook out of the motor mounts when they cranked it.
They ended up replacing the engine since they could not find the real problem and that I was inside the 100,000 mile warranty. (And they know that I maintain my trucks very well.)
7.4 was pretty decent, 6.0 was a huge mistake.
Let's see who will "test drive" the new one coming in less than a year.
