wd :no fire

wd seems to not be firing (open points with screw driver and no spark),yet with ign. switch on and points closed I can put the red lead of a volt meter on the wire comming from the ign. switch and test full voltage to either terminal of the coil and to the terminal on the dist. housing, the points and the plate the points attach to. Rotate the engine where the points are open there is no voltage reading at the terminals I mentioned but there is voltage to the plate the points attach to. Why isn't there fire across the points when the engine is cranking? Is something grounding out or shorting out? help appreciated

Well if you open the points with a screw driver are you making sure you are not shorting them out at the same time?? I open them by hand and yes you have to do it just right or you do get zapped real good. Another thing to check is take the coil wire out of the cap and hold it close to the engine and see if you get spark there. If you do then the points are working so you either have a bad rotor or bad cap

Thanks, I have tried opening the points by hand as well. I have pulled the coil wire loose and tried to jump a spark back where it plugs in.Couldn't see or hear anything. can try again.

Anytime (regardless if points open or closed) the Ign switch is ON there should be voltage on the coils input (NOT to distributor) terminal. Over on the coils output (to distributor) terminal, there should ONLY be voltage when the points are OPEN but zero volts when they are closed.

As Rich pointed out, you need to use an insulated object to open the poinst to be sure youre not shorting them out

Run through my Ignition Troubleshooting Procedure should help

Thanks John T. I'll recheck what you mentioned and look at the trouble shooting procedures hopefully in a day or so if I get free.

If there's REALLY voltage to the plate the points mount to you need to clean up the area where it mounts and get it GROUNDED as there's NO WAY you're gonna get spark out of the coil's secondary if the ground side of the points ain't GROUNDED!

Excellant trouble shooting guide. The ballist resistor is burnt out. If the tractor has been converted to 12 volt will I need a different ballist resistor from the original?

Thanks
