black carbon out of muffler

I have just finished restoring my farmall m. I guess I never noticed it before but everytime I start the tractor up I shoots black carbon out of the muffler, all over my nice new paint job. This is driving me nuts and I was wondering if the is the norm? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

put an elbow on it the shoots sideways.. this keep the water out and the gunk off the paint...

the black soot will be pretty much normal.

My Oliver 88 did the same thing until I replaced the leaky needle and seat. It was slightly flooded every time I fired her up. I was about ready to put an elbow in the pipe but the new needle/seat pretty much stopped the mess. It's better for the engine too. A rain cap will tend to deflect the black soot back down toward the hood but then you have the water down the muffler problem which takes you back to the sooty mess again.Jim

That black soot is an indication that your idle mixture is way too rich. Like most operators I assume you park the tractor, set throttle at low idle and then shut it down after a few minutes. It only takes a few minutes at idle with a rich mixture to really build up the carbon in the ombustion chamber.
Try leaning the idle mixture, and also try idling the engine a few minuted before shutdown but then give it a burst of wot for about 20 seconds and shut it down real fast after that.
