I've got an 1995 F-250 with 7.3L turbocharged diesel. Used to get 15mpg, empty. Somewhere between 10 and 12 mpg with a load, depending on conditions. I haven't checked the fuel economy this year, but we used to be pretty good with that kind of record keeping.

PS- All those mpg were assuming mostly highway miles.

The power stroke is a good engine. I have an 02 F350 and get ~18MPG empty and ~ 11MPG with the gooseneck / loaded. No big hills and highway. The key to MPG is rear axle ratio. Most have a 4.10 ratio and get ~ 15MPG highway / empty. The F450"s had a higher ratio , ~ 4.80 I think. So MPG will suffer. Mine is a 4X4 and has a 3.73 ratio limited slip / was ordered that way. Good MPG and "stump pulling" power in low range.

Hey Ralph,
We bought an '00 F550 crew cab 4 x 4 w/7.3 PSD when it was 6 months old... have driven it ever since. Absolutely the best truck I've ever owned! It'll do anything I need to do... just went and bought a load of feed for the critters yesterday (about 250 mile round trip) brought back more than 16k of feed (truck, trailer and load weighed about 32k) at highway speeds, up and down hills, etc. Rides like a (stout) cadillac! As far as mileage is concerned, it ranges from about 11 mpg (normal here in the high altitudes) to as high as 15 mpg (at a little above sea level) The best I've gotten here in mountain country was pulling our 37' 5th wheel camper up a long grade on a 2 lane road (speed limit 65 mph)... 13 mpg. The nice thing about these trucks is that the mileage dosen't change significantly whether the truck is empty of if "the bumper is dragging the ground." They were designed for work (heavy duty EVERYTHING) and do it very efficiently! HTH ...D

I have a 99 f350 crewcab 4x4,3:73 rearend empty 14 mpg short trips, long trips like 350+ to torrington to sell calves 15.5 if I stay at 65. Loaded six bulls to Walden,Co round trip 350+ maybe 12mpg, but there is Rabbit Ears pass in the middle.

Ive got a 02 F-250 I can get 20-22mpg empty on longer trips if i can keep it around 60 mph. I get 10-12mpg pulling my 32 foot goose neck. I think it helped i have mine chipped and big intake and full 4 inch exhaust. I love the power increase it gave me.
