magic jack- never pay a phone bill again

I saw an add in a magazine for a thing called a
"Magic Jack". It says you plug it into your
computer then plug your phone line into it.
Sounds to good to be true; no more phone bills.
They say no charge for local, long distance call,
or information. It cost $29.95 one time charge
for the item. Does anyone have any experience
using this? If it works it would save me $40.00
a month.

A former co-worker who was into every amway style pyramid scheme that came along tried to get me involved with some sort of device like this. He claimed that it could pick up a dial tone anywhere. I never asked him too many questions about it because I knew that he was always in some sort of scheme or another, but I'm sure it couldn't do all that he said that it could. He stopped trying to sell me "Noni" juice when I told him I could buy a fifth of liquor for what a bottle of his miracle potion cost and I knew for a fact it would make me feel better.

they work on your broadband hookup...$29.95 to start for equiptment and then $19.95 a year...
i guess its ok if you leave your computer on 24/7

It will work if you have DSL or cable. I do know that it will not work with Alltel (It is now Verizon) wireless. The way it acted I think they have it blocked.

I've got unlimited calling, nationwide on our phone plan. Plus our broadband is supplied by the phone company. If we were paying for long distance, then I could see it being useful. But we're good with what we've got.

Daughter and Son In Law tried it - went back to Bell South - lost signal or something - off and on - "anyway" if it sounds too good to be true it usually is.
We would be talking to them and you would miss words here and there. Everyone they used with the phone during that time frame had the same problem hearing them on a consistant basis. Never went completely out just a word or 2 here and there but you can t carry on a conversation if you keep saying - what did you just day?? Are you there. etc.!!!

Won t work on dial up, the charge is for a year, the first year is double to pay for the box. Take it with you and use it any where with a lap top.

I have one at the store. They do work as advertised as long as you have the following requirements met...

REQUIRES DSL or CABLE with a download of 768k and upload of 200k or better.

Does NOT work on any satellite service. Reason being is that there is an inherent lag in transmission to 23,000 miles into space. In fact Hughes claims they have the port blocked for voice over IP.

Any computer with a 1.8 Ghz processor and one USB 2.0 port will work.

You can not port a phone number from another service.

msrp is 39.99 and that includes the first year. 19.99 per year after that.

Sound quality is good and the ooma is better. http://www.ooma.com/

Well.. My ex-gf's dad got one. They don't work with fax machines reliably even if you pull back to 9600 baud and less. It's a USB 2.0 device so some older computers won't work with it.

And when we played with it about a year ago I found out they didn't have any Iowa numbers (even for the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area where I was) instead we got a number local to the Chicago area. I don't need to tell you that's not helpful for your friends and clients that still pay for long-distance service!

Im pretty sure it got sent back from whence it came.

Who knows, it was a decent idea, I just don't think the infrastructure was ready for it yet.

It's called VOIP, Voice Over Internet Protocol. You don't need this gadget though, just a headset with a mic and some special software you can download for free.

neighbors have Hughes and use SKYPE on it nearly every day with no problem...trust me i aint a fan of sat...just told wild blow where to stick my service...found a new wireless isp and its like i moved to the big city :)

Hi, I got one of those little boxes for 29.95 i believe and it works quite well albeit with a few glitches. occasionally you hear a faint echo of your own voice but it seems to synch up after a few seconds. all in all works great on a fast connection (I have roadrunner) and super value for the bucks.
