ScottyHOMEy said: (quoted from post at 17:25:41 11/05/09) It ain't about the payroll. Yeah, they're a rich team, in a rich market with a driven family ownership willing to spend the money.

They pay a huge luxury tax on their payroll. This year it was almost $27 million, all of which goe to augment payroll for other teams. The only other team to hit the trigger and pay that tax this year was Detroit and the only other teams to have paid the tax ever are the Rd Sox and the Angels. And over the six years that the tax has been in place, NYY have put in almost $150 million, nearly ten times the total of the other three teams combined. But they['ve spent that kind of money for the last nine years and no title show for it, so I jus't can't buy that it's about the payroll.

New York has always been that kind of market. Look at the old battles in the 40s and 50s. Giants, Dodgers and Yankees, always in there. It ain't the money, it's the kind of talent Cashman and Co. can put together with it, and a manager who can shape them into a team. Twins and the Phillies were no pushovers. They are tough teams and they got beat by another tough team.

I`ve gotta respectfully disagree. While spending gobs of money may not guarantee a team a championship, it sure the heck improves their chances of winning one. Otherwise these richer ballclubs wouldn`t be doing it.Rooting for a small market club can be frustrating ,when all you really are is a farm club for the Yanks,Red Sox,Angels, Dodgers,Mets & Cubs. Sure if these small market teams do everything right, they can win a championship, but their margin for error is much less than it is for the wealthier teams. Again ,I`m NOT saying it guarantees a winner (see Cubs,Mets !) , but the way I see it,for the most part, more money = more wins.Just my opinion.

There's always next year waiting on spring training.

I thought the Phils made a decent accounting of themselves, but in the end, there's no substitute for $$$. I beleive poor Pedro is pretty much at the end of his tether- unless you're Jamie Moyer, you're just not gonna get far with an 85 MPH fastball!

Ya, I give the Phillies alot of credit too! Every one is getting older. I do think the payroll for the Yankees is way to high also.
