years ago the late 60s or early 70s popular mechanics or mechanics illistrated did an article about building a working scale model case steam engine.i was wondering if any one had,has seen the aritcle and maby built one. i was also was wondering if some one had the plans.i also thought that you could buy the plans also. thanks

Just do a search for "miniature steam engines"
You can get complete kits and build them yourself.

The wife and i attended a model train show today. There was so many people i couldn't believe its size. There was many working layouts in all scales.

There was a big oval with maybe 10 differt trains that they would rotate that were real working "steam engines". These were big in size like something you might run threw your garden, maybe 14" tall by 24" long engine only.

But they would add water and they even had fire boxes in which they added some sort of fuel and they were running around. They even had miny steam whistles.

So if you don't find what your looking for look under trains.

Yeah, if you watch E-bay the plans show up fairly regularly. The plans I bought came from PM for a little Case steam tractor, I have a picture of two old local boys with the same engines they had made hanging right above my computer.

In the US, Live Steam Magazine is a good reference. I see an advertisement for scaled Case steam tractor plans in Engines and Engineers magazine regularly. Castings are also available ready for machining.

if you ever find yourself near cullman, al. go to the buettner bros. lumber company. inside you will find a hand built steam locomotive with tender. about 3 ft. tall and 12ft. long. built in the fella's basement and ran a track around his back yard to give neighbor hood children a ride. guite impressive site.

my neighbor and i built that model engine. we just finished it this spring. it was featured in popler mag feb. issue 1971. i had the prints all these years, but didn't know how to make the parts. the prints as they were printed are way off. it is almost as though two people had made them. we had to make several changes. i do not have the equip to send pics or i would do so. wally
