International 544

i own a international 544 and it has been running rough hitting and missing. I replaced the coil, plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor and the points because they were burned up. I set the point gap to .020. this improved its running a little. i also put a carb kit in the carburator. Now i can't seem to figure out the problem. I seems as if not all the cylinders are firing. it will run fine for about twenty seconds then almost quit then it will go back to running good for 20 seconds...... its almost consistant.... which makes me think its an ignition problem and not a fuel issue. Any one have any ideas??

yes the screen that goes into the carb is ok the sediment bowl is clean and i blew back up into the tank with an air compressor to make sure there was no blockage in the lines or where fuel leaves the tank

Bad connection going to the coil 12V side?

Try clipping a lead between the +12V term on the coil and the pos post of the battery to see if it evens out.

My 444 uses resistive wire in the wiring harness for a ballast resistor to drop the voltage to 6 volts for the coil. It all got broken except one strand and ran terrible. I put in a 12V coil and bypassed the resistive wire crud.

yea i have a 12volt coil on there, it seems to me if the resistor was bad id have no spark at all and it wouldnt run at all

The coil should be 6 volts at the coil + lead with the points closed.

Unless you have bypassed the resistor/resistor wire and put a true 12V coil on it.
