8n pto problem

pto will not engage push on lever i can hear it grinding like it wants to go in but wont this happened when i was brush hogging heard a bang sheared pin on brush hog hasnt worked since would greatly appreciate advice

Sounds like you might have twisted the PTO shaft before the shear pin broke. Was the shear pin a hardened bolt by any chance?

My uneducated expectation is that a tractor with a live PTO has a friction clutch that might slip a bit, delivering less torque when the drive is overloaded. Bush hoggen with my 8N I have broken a lot of the (5/16", I think) shear pins of different grades and not done other damage. The 8N, not having the live PTO clutch, has the output shaft hard-wired to the rear drive wheels and the forward momentum of the entire unit and torque of the engine are transferred directly to the PTO output shaft.
