Manley Tire and Oil, I wasn't impressed, your opinion

I went to a sale today and bought a Roorda spreader, I had to pull it about 45 miles home, I ran out of grease before I got the wheels done so OI stopped at Manley and asked if I could buy a tube or get a dozen pumps for the wheels. Trudy went to the shop, the mech. came up with a tube and wanted $3.00 a tube for grease of about 1/2 the quality of the grease I buy for less, she then showed up with a grease gun and said if you use a few shots she would still have to charge me, I asked how much, she didn't know so I left. I know you are thinking I am a tight a$$ but I have bought a few sets of pickup and some front and rear tractor tires. I am pretty sure they made at least $3.00 profit from my purchases. If some one stopped at my farm I would give them some, it wouldn't break me and it would help them out. I don't need to buy tires from them and won't anymore. Ok I vented, thanks for listening!

If they were a customer service comes first operation they would have helped you grease the bearings just so you would come back and send in more customers based on word of mouth.

Sounds about par.

I once pulled into a Flying J truck stop with a heater hose leaking on a Dodge B200 van. It was simple enough, I just pulled the doghouse, cut the end off the hose and reclamped it.

Since it was summer, and I hadn't really lost that much coolant, all I wanted to do was fill the system with water and test the anti-freeze later. You know, somehow no one in their entire service area could find a bucket or container I could borrow the put some water in the van. They obviously wanted me to buy a gallon of anti-freeze for a ridiculous price. I went into the store and bought a gallon of drinking water for a dollar or two.

Well I don't know what Flying J you where to But they all have a hydrant at the diesel Ilands and I would have just looked in the trash can next to the fuel pumps for an empty oil jug for he water container and not paid for the water.
As for the wheel bearing deal I would have though no big deal for that much.

i know women charge, but extra for grease, she should have supplied it!whats this world coming to?

dboll, I think you were running on a short fuse for some reason. Maybe it wasn't all that good of grease but I usually pay near that for good grease and to protect what I had already invested I think I would have done it. Sometimes you just have to bend over. That'll remind you to check your gun the next time before you leave home.
You can at that point decide if you ever want to do business with them again or not.

are we still talking about wheel bearings? hehe, yes I was a little crabby, I went a ways and they were still cool so I continued home, I have good tire dealers closer and they don't have good prices like they used to before Jim split.

All that stress over $3? Yeah, it is unnecessary in my opinion, but I like to pick my battles and $3 ain't worth buttin' heads over. Just my $.02.

If they don't normally sell grease, you should have been happy they offered to sell a tube. They could have just let you use a grease gun, I suppose, but just because you bought tires from them in the past, doesn't mean they need to cater to your every need.
I was at a Canadian Tire several years ago asking something at the service desk. I guy came to the shop door with a brand new air tank, he just bought, and asked if he could get it filled. They told him they were very busy and he'd have to leave it with them to be filled. They wouldn't even let him fill it himself. Now that's bad customer service. Dave

If a place gets a bad reputation how does that place ever go back and erase that. People here still talk about places from 20 years ago even though the places have changed hands and employees.
Big O tire charged me for shop supplies $5. I asked them if there was any charge for mounting and balancing when I first asked about the tire price and they said no, but when I asked what the shop supplies were when i got my bill, they said weights and whatever they used for my tires. Way it looks to me i was charged for mounting and balancing.
Son in law said a garage wanted $40 for SS.

Yea they were extra Stupid whenever anyone can get some good PR for virtually nothing they should do it.One set of tires sold would pay for a whole lot of grease and instead of being here telling thousands what tightwad jerks they are if they'd of sent a mechanic out with a gease gun for 30 seconds and greased your equipment you'd be here telling everyone what a great place they are.

a lot of these places need to train their employees on customer service,im the same way if somebody is in a bind and i can help i do, we had a similer incident happen here and it cost the tire store our buisiness, pulled in to have then fix a flat on one of the companies peterbilts, the tires on this truck were theirs and they told us if we bought a full set [ 18] they would fix our flats, we bought tires for 2 tractors and 3 trailers over 2 years time, when i told then i needed a flat fixed they told me "they didnt want to mess with a truck" never will buy another tire there

My brother runs one of the feed stores in town. Him and the owner are always helping out customers when they can. Give them free items at times. Answer there questions. They make every customer feel important. As a result the place is always packed. On Saturday you have to get in early to get in line. The other feed store can hardly keep the doors open. Customer service does count and is rare today.

I used to charge for shop supplies as a separate item on invoice . Then I got to looking at it from customer's side a little more . Yes shop supplies are used , yes they cost money . Bigger jobs take more mics supplies , brake clean, carb clean , rags , bolts , nuts, wire connectors etc. I decided it looked better to figure that into my labor rate,,it is a cost of business. customers liked it ,,I liked , no more Line item on invoice for "shop Supplies "

I look at this way, business should never be garanteed a profit.
Profit is what is left when all facets come together.
When I see fixed cost line items, I see a company that is not confident that they can turn a profit the old fashioned way, so they "gaurantee" that they will turn a profit by quoting a "base" price, but then adding fixed and variable cost on to that after the fact. It is a form of "bait and switch" if you think about it.
I would like to take this cast of business owners and accountants in to a restaurant where they are going to pay for their own food. Have the menu show the prices.
When they get their final bills, there would be fixed and variable add on's for napkins, cleaning the dishes and silverwear, steam cleaning the carpet, etc. Can you imagine how mad they would be?
Has anyone noticed the absurd profit margins on iced tea? It cost maybe a nickle or so a glass including ice. Let's assume someone gets 4 refills.(most folks do not drink that much) We are not at half a dollar in cost. So double that and $1.00 would be more than sufficient profit.
Some places charge over $2.00.
I get ice water most of time now.

Yeah....I"ll give you the fact that they could have gave the grease to you. That being said, $3.00 vs. the risk of wheel bearing failure and repair costs seems cheap enough to me.

Something wrong with me posting? My previous post got deleted. If a moderator has a problem, then it should be with the entire thread!

Attention everyone who reads this thread: its' a bit subtle, but dboll admits (deeper in this thread) that he is no longer a customer of Manley Tire & Oil and stopped being a customer BEFORE this incident. Demanding free service from a store you no longer patronise?? Please don't come to my business either!

I like Manley Tire & Oil. Very happy with the price and service.

3 dollars for a tube of grease.Sounds fair to me and more than likely someone just wanted to complain about a business.
