My hay rake just got expensive....

Sometimes ya just can't get ahead

Guess that long road trip for the baler took it's toll. Was going to pick up the rake today and was going along just fine when smoke/steam started coming out the PCV tube. shut it right off and started looking. Was a couple qts low on oil when I was fine 2 days ago. Walked to the house and got oil to fill it. Cranked over a couple times and made kind of a squeek and the motor locked.
Upside, if there is one, is a kid in town is a certified AG mechanic and has an almost complete workshop/garage, don't have a girlfriend/wife, and likes to tinker. He just redone the same tractor last year, so was able to tell me about what the damage will be (real acceptable considering the price of another tractor). Said he'll make it new in 2 weeks or less. Been wanting to do it anyway, guess I just needed a jolt. He's even giving me a loaner tractor while he has mine.
If it's a light fix, he'll patch it up, if it's any more, he'll replace everything (pistons, cylinders, bearings, and have the head done. Should outlast me then.

If you think about it you lucked out. You could have been out stuck somewhere with either the rake or the baler. At least you were at home.

Exactly......... And having the local kid and his family there was a little miracle in itself.

Dave, I"m no "guru" but that sounds like a blown head gasket that blew and let your anti-freeze hydraulically lock a piston. Once he pulls the head you"ll know more. Am very glad it happened when it did. What kind of tractor? Good Luck with it, now may be the best time to fix it instead of when you"ve got a bunch of hay down;-)

Hope it's something simple, but a rebuilt engine wouldn't be such a bad thing either.
It's a German made Farmall w/ a 3cyl diesel motor (26HP).

You know??? The headgasket and hydrolock never crossed my mind. But, on the trip back w/ the baler, I was climbing a long grade and the thing just bogged down and quit. Tried to start it and it kinda grunted. Put on my flashers and waved the cars behind me around and tried the starter before calling someone. Started right up and was fine the rest of the way home. Wasn't much different today. Maybe things aren't so bad...

Hey Dave, I'm curious why you didn't just go with your pick-up or even car to get the baler and rake? Are there laws against it over there? There have been lots of threads about it and that's what everyone does here.

couldn't find a trailer big enough for the baler and the rake is only a few miles away. Pulling the baler with a car isn't allowed.

What a cry'n shame. You were lucky the breakdown didn't happen during the transport of machinery like the fellow in this post said. If we were neighbors , I would gladly loan you the hedious,Ugly, embarassing 706. All joking aside, I sure would. !!!!! Hope it's an easy fix.!!. Keep us posted as to the problem and the end result (repairs). I.H made a workhorse in all the models for their time. Yours is no exception.
LOU.

I know you would Lou... Kid's tractor is a little brother to yours (644). I'll use it until he has mine finished.

Not looking so good.......... Wasn't a hydrolock. Just have to figure if it's a siezed piston or crankshaft (or something else).

Dave

Maybe its nothing with the motor as far as locking up. Maybe its the transmission (just an idea). Though it doesnt anwser the problem of the engine smoking. It just needs the smoke put back in thats what makes it work.
