Are 70 series Case tractors any good?

In particular I am considering adding a 1270 and an 870 to my farm, price is right. Not too familiar with Case tractors. Anything in particular I should check on the tractors?

I had a 2470- 4wd for over ten years. Biggest, almost only issue was engine problems, including a bad overhaul. Installed an 855 Cummins in it, and it"s still running fine for the current owner. One issue I did not have, but was widely reported, was that the 70 series had a problem with the pto starting up by itself. It is hydraulically controlled. So when unplugging the chopper, I would disengage the chopper gearbox. Other option is to let the engine cool and shut it off. Frankly, I"d look to Ollie or White if I was to get away from JD and AC.

Post your question on the Case board. For the most part they were very good heavy built tractors. Some folks stay away from the "power shift" models but others claim if the P-shift wasn't abused they were fine. Usually lots of good HP for not alot of money. There is a 970 and 1070 (hopped up motor) on e ba y right now for the 3900-4500 range. Parts for the 70 series are available.

We didn't much care for the 1570 Dad bought.

It was a very clean tractor, but rated at nearly the same HP as the JD 6030 he already had...

He thought it'd be a good backup tractor - but it was not NEARLY the horse the 6030 was.

Plus, we had to have the engine overhauled... Then the front end pivot broke loose, etc, etc... And none of those things were from abuse...

I DID really like how easily it started, the short turning radius, and the cab was pretty comfortable...

We had a Case 870 for ten years from new to
4000 hours. Like said before it was nicely
balanced as far as weight and horsepower. After
a year or so,we turned the horsepower up to about
110 horsepower. It held up well all things considered. Replaced one hydraulic pump and
rebuilt the powershift at 3800 hours. Rebuild
was done in our shop. The pump was quite reason,
but the powershift kit was about $1500 if I
remember right.
The one thing I didn't particularly care for
was the powershift. You alway had to start out
in first range and shift up. It was good in the
field but not to smooth on the road.

I forgot to add after we sold the Case 870 we
bought a couple of Whites. The models are a
2-135 and a 4-120. If you do your own mechanical
work, the parts seem to be more reasonable and
they are easier to work on. Parts availabilty
has been good thru Agco.

I have a 1974 and my cousin has 2 a Yellow one and a white one. Mine has given me good service although I haven't used it a lot. Mine has powershift and I like it. My cousin bought both his used back in the 80's. His have a bunch of hours on them and have been very reliable. They get used for everything on the farm except chisel plowing. If you can find one in good shape buy it.

we have had a 970, 1370 and still have a 1070 and 1570. I am not scared of them, change the oil in the trans. and treat it right and it will treat you right, we've done alot of farming with case's. 1270 is the same drive train as a 1370 but with a turbo 451 instead of a 504 so it was harder to hurt the trans/diff. but is 1000rpm pto only. 870 is a nice tractor, any Case will usually make the same power as other brands on less fuel. People that knock the reliability of a 1370 should dyno one for often they were 185-190hp though factory rated at 155. look at general condition if it looks abused avoid it and learn how to properly operate the ps.

I would go with the 30 series low rpm/high torque if it were me , but you seem to have allready located the others. A 930 and a 1030 would serve you well. There are a lot more of them still working than the 70 series. A lot of those are in salvage or out behind the barns. I just believe the 30,s were a tougher built tractor as were many of the older makes. Don't have much use for high revving tractor engines. Might just be that we farmed with these back in the '60,s and I have a soft spot.

We had a 1070. Reasonably dependable tractor. near the end of the time we had it we did put in a torque limiter and have the powershift apart to put in the larger bolts after the originals broke.

There are some ergonomic issues that are a major pain on these tractors though. For one the cowl is connected to the rest of the tractor so it pulls the noise and heat in the cab. The other is the blasted location of the batteries. We never did but there are a bunch of those around here that have had the batteries relocated. The original location is just a major pain to service and replace.

Case 70 series engines still run slower than the competion, around 2200rpm no load, 70 series has alot better brakes and steering than 30 series and an 8 spd. trans is the same as a 30, I agree the battery location is not user friendly, I make sure I have good cables and keep them clean and the hood design is hard to work on the engine, ie removing heads, more expensive to work on the trans than a binder but the neighbor usually has a red one in the shop ours stay home and work!
