O/T Chain saw blade

I was doing a little chain saw work today. I cut one branch and started on another. My chain was gone. I have had them come off the bar, but in all my chain saw work I never have had one break and come completely off. It was a fairly new blade also. I did find the chain, it had a broken link. I guess like anything else given enough time anything will brake. Anyone else had this happen? Stan

Broken links can be replaced. Some chains are tempered too hard.A file wont touch them.If this is the case with your chain junk it.

dad worked in the wood for 20 years, never seen one break. but seen one break when a guy was cutting a 2" limb, something you don't forget.

I had one break on a 44" bar while I was milling walnut a few weeks ago. The 24" board captured it, never left the log. 5 minute repair at the saw shop. Same chain's been fine since. Wasn't dull at the time, no idea why it broke.

I have had that happen at least four times, and always with the bigger saw. It has slapped my hand on two ocasions, but no stitches.

My way of thinking is I was running the chain to loose.

Just a couple weeks ago I must have hooked some major hardware in a hard maple. Bent and broke the chain, bent the bar, and broke the sprocket. About one hundred thirty dollars later we were back in business. Been cutting firewood since 1970, and never had that happen.

I have the professional chain breaker, and rivit spinner, from a chain saw business that closed. But have never used it because I always wonder what happens if I do not do it correct. As the wife said, another three hundred dollars sitting collecting dust--if I could even find it.

i had one break on my stihl 028. brand new chain, dealer made the chain from bulk stock and put the connector link in. that link broke and shot the chain right out of the saw. good think nobody was in the way.

It's more common when folks remove a link so they can get more use out of an older, worn chain. The rivets are so worn that one of them snaps.
