Got "Old John" back from the mechanic last w/e. Turns out we were right the first time. It was the carb.

We had it rebuilt, but when the rebuilt carb was put on, he still didn"t run worth a flip.

Next, we had the magneto rebuilt. When that was installed, there was something wrong with it and it wasn"t producing spark. We pulled one off one of the other tractors and Mr. Nixon put it on. Old John still wasn"t running very well.

Mr. Nixon went back to the carb and "tweaked" it some. Now "Old John" runs just fine.

We had the carb rebuilt by K&K, who have a good reputation. My guess is that something got jiggled around when they shipped the rebuilt carb back to us.

Its good to have "Old John" back where he belongs. He"s got his own spot in the hay barn now. Its real nice to see Daddy"s tractor parked on the place ready and waiting to be used again.

P.S - we also purchased 2 more good, used magnetos to add to our spare parts collection.

Shoot thats young John compared to the one I have

He's not the oldest JD we have. "Earl" is a 1939 B handstart. Old John got his name because we've had him the longest.

I like how you have them named. I also name my tractors (after the old owner) Ive got Harvy the 970 case, Arnie the 656 farmall, Don the MTA farmall and my favorite Glen my John Deere 60 (Dads) I think it kinda gives a nod to the people that have spent so many hours working and caring for them.

The one in the picture has been in my family since 1940. My grand father got it some time in 1940 and I even have the owners manual that came with it when it was new

We bought "Earl" from a young man in Arkansas. The tractor originally belonged to his uncle, who was named Earl. He had bought the tractor from his cousin with the intention of restoring it and lost interest. We got it and named it after the original owner.

39B "Uncle Earl"
40B "Lazarus"
43B "John B"
46A "Easy"
48A "Old John"
51M "Sparky"
51MT "Sam"
52A "52"
53 70 "15"
53 70 "1011"
55 70 "Big John"
56 70 "Vernon"

Yep, seems to me I told you most "governor problems" turn out to be carburetor problems!

That's cool!

My 48A belonged to my dad, but he wasn't the original owner. He found it in a shed in Indiana. It hadn't been taken care of and the block had frozen and cracked. He got it running and used it for several years before he died in '89.

My dad was from Gosport, Indiana. He used to hire out to the local farmers and grew up driving the poppin johnnies and finally bought one. He really liked that old tractor.

My grand father wasn't the original owner either. It is a 1935 JD-B that I posted the picture of so my grand father got it when it was 5 years old

James,

You guys really need to add a 20 or 30 series tractor to the line up. You'll be in heaven with real 3 point to move those bales around. You ought to be able to find a nice 720/730 LP down there in your neck of the woods. When you get one you'll be wondering how you made it sooo long without it. Mostly just an excuse for another tractor.... You needed an excuse about as bad as I do I'm sure. LOL
