While trying to find a picture of a machine (tedder?) I have access to, I ran across these pics. Thought you might enjoy. There are still some folks that work with horses/oxen in some places here in hard to get to places. Just click the arrows above the picture.

Probably in this case a harvest festival. But, sometimes there doesn't have to be an occasion just a bunch of folks getting together.

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I envy you living where you do...it looks like it may resemble the midwest some 40 or more years ago.

Was just talking to a neighbor this evening and he told me that he had the first tractor in town in 1961.

I wasn't too far off, was I?

How do you find the communication there? Have you picked up a lot of German, or do the locals speak pretty good English?

I get the impression that you've done a pretty good job of adapting to local customs and lifestyle, and have been accepted by the locals.

Mis understood you. Right in the middle (little south) of what was west germany, Been here 20 years, but just started really picking up the language in the last 10 since we bought the place. Got tired of the wife having to come with me and translate when I wanted to buy feed, hay, or just drink beer and schnaps with the farmers. Got things pretty much under control now face to face. Telephone and writing is a little tricky sometimes.

Been in your shoes as you described. Worst part is having to try to learn the two types of German. :(

Not really, but they are around. German army has some mountain soldiers that use some nice ones (not real big). And I've seen some oops' donkey/pony cross. I'd lofe to have a big riding mule if I had the room.
